Tiznow retrospective: I want one!

A lovely tribute to Tiznow on the Blood-Horse BC website.

I love how he stamps his offspring–all the ones I’ve seen look so much like him. I want one! Anyone seen any on Canter or any of the other tb placement websites? Or are they too fancy to end up there?

I met Tiznow in person  hes gorgeous. I heard a few years ago his foals wern’t really doing all that great on the track and there was concern about him not lasting at WinStar because of it. Im sure you could find one somewheres.

I was on a Cees Tizzy (sire of Tiznow) mare the other day, and a friend of mine was in love. He said she could be his hunter/jumper… I laughed as she will be a broodmare… black type and several hundred thousand in earnings… but I bet she’s make a lovely show horse. She does come from a great mare line though and will race (with any luck) till she’s at least 7. Her mom won a Gr 3 as a 7 year old and it is a late developing family! We have a 3,4,5 year old full and 1/2 siblings. The colt by Street Cry is something else. The other filly has earned $500,000+
But the Cees Tizzy’s and Tiznow blood have a soft spot in my hear! definitely has a soft spot in my heart!

His cheapest yearling at KEESEP went for $7,000.

He’s got 45 offspring catalogued for KEENOV; most of them are weanlings but there are several of his daughters selling as broodmares/broodmare prospects. They will probably go cheap, especially in this market. www.keeneland.com

He should also have lots in the January sale.

I think he’s pretty hot right now. I doubt they will go too cheap.

Yeah, 6 Tiznows in the Breeders Cup pre-entries alone… I doubt he’ll cut it at WinStar.

Of course, I’m just joking with you.

Ditto.

But, farmgirl isn’t wrong either. I had a school-sponsored farm tour at WSF ('07) and also fell in love with Tiznow. But the manager did not seem very high on him, compared to the other stallions. I got the impression that Tiznow was “of some concern” at that time. Not anymore!! His kids are rockets this year! And selling like crazy.

At the moment, Tiznow is #3 on the 2008 General Sires List with almost $8,000,000 in earnings for the year: 11 stakes winners, 6 graded stakes winners, 4 G1 winners. There are few stallions hotter at the moment. His 2008 stud fee was $30,000. That’s expected to rise to at least $75,000 for 2009.

The Tiznows tend to be big, gorgeous, athletic horses. But I don’t think you’ll find many of them going cheap.

Your best bet is one who didn’t cut it at the track. A gelding who’s dropped down to lower tier tracks OR a filly who was retired without much of a race record. They weren’t terribly discriminating about the mares he bred, but he DID breed a lot of mares.

At Keeneland November, these two probably won’t go for a lot.
Capricious - 3YO SP in minor stakes, not bred
Royal One - 3YO, placed once (not a winner), not bred (race or broodmare prospect)

Your idea of what isn’t “a lot” must be very different from mine.

I have a good friend of mine who is a trainer at Churchill offer to give me one (a gelding) free. I had always admired him as he was very good looking and had a nice way of going. He was just looking for a good home for him and he really didn’t have anything wrong with him…at the time-I really couldn’t take another one so I passed. If I hear of another one though…I will keep you in mind!

i got a private tour of just about any farm that i chose to go to, thanks to a very special special person who does work at all of the farms for the most part, in the area down there. She knew her thoroughbreds and just about everything happening with them.

She said while we where walking through the property of Winstar (this is about 3yrs ago now) that his offspring wern’t doing well and where failing to impress the team at Winstar and he probably wouldnt be offered there the following year.

I know im not wrong. i was talking with someone who directly worked with these farms. He’s quite the handsome fellow-along with every other thoroughbred stallion in the barn. i would love to see some of his foals.

Perhaps this was before the Breeder’s Cup–I think Folklore was from his first crop (Juvenile Fillies winner).

Well actually you are wrong, or at least your friend was–because Tiznow was offered at stud at WinStar the following year, and every year since. He did go through a somewhat quiet period while his 2nd and 3rd crops were beginning to race, but now he’s come roaring back with a vengeance and is one of the hottest stallions around.

I work with all the big farms too. And we currently have a mare in foal to Tiznow. So my info is pretty accurate.

I recently helped place a Tiznow son for free also. I do think these are exceptions however. This colt had a bad breathing problem and had already had surgery, which failed. He is big and pretty also!
