does anyone have any experiences or insights into TMJ issues in horses, how this expresses itself, how it was diagnosed in your case and treated ?
I have a friend who has just had her horse operated on for this, at the Saskatoon Vet School. They are experimenting with attempting to improve this issue surgically. They are looking for more horses with this problem to add to their study. So yes, my friend and the vet involved at the vet school are the ones you need to talk to. Apparently her horse had a “clicking” sound when chewing, and general signs of discomfort, getting worse over time. Contact the Saskatoon Veterinary School. I can find the vet’s name if you like.
OK here is the info for you… the facebook page is “Equine TMJ Disease”. The vet involved is Dr. James Carmalt. I will PM you my friend’s name, you can also contact her through her facebook page, you will find her experiences helpful. Good luck.
My horse’s dentist who also does acu/chiro can usually take care of minor issues. She’s also a vet.
i tried to find your friend on FB but not sure which one, which province is she in ?
found her and the TMJ page
In my case it showed up out of the blue. Horse wouldn’t tolerate any attempt to bend or turn his head to the right. He got rather explosive when I persisted. Vet was seeing him for another issue anyway, he palpated the TMJ and found soreness and some inflammation in that area. He did acupuncture and chiro on him and prescribed Surpass for several days rubbed into the area. I’ve never had another issue with him.
TMJ issues can show up with any extremity of signs from just being “stiff” to one side to full on explosions. You can palpate the joint to find pain or tenderness, and I find squeezing the joint top to bottom will show if one or both sides has an issue.
thank you all !!
