To buy or not to buy

I’m just curious if anyone has experienced buying an OTTB from a trainer in Pipersville, PA named Mark Bliss. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If it is the Mark Bliss that was in NY for a while and before that in Pa years ago. I would run the other direction and quickly.

RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN away! Well on second thought it may not be the total end of the world if the horse is being sold as an OTTB as opposed to a race horse, just make sure the horse actually exists and he has the right to sell it. Mark is a horse dealer/crook of the worst kind. I have the judgement against him to prove it. He has everything he owns in his wife’s name so you can’t collect. He took me for close to $10,000 by selling me a horse that did not exist. BTW he does not have a trainer’s license. I could have filed my judgement with the stewards who would have in turn pulled his license until the judgement was satisfied but alas, he took care of that avenue as well. Hopefully the universe will get even with him for me, maybe a bus could run over him…

Run far and fast… Everything the others have said and more!!!

Ditto… Ditto… DITTO!!!

There are plenty of OTTBs on CANTER sites to pick from!!!

I have no idea what he is like now, but many years ago, he was a crook. I had a friend who bought a horse from him, got the horse home, and when the drugs wore off, he found out what he really had.

Mark, of course, denied all, but eventually took the horse back. However, no refund. My friend took him to court and prevailed, and eventually collected.

There are too many nice horses out there to waste time on those who are currently in the possession of a jerk. Sadly- for those horses…

I remember his favorite thing was to sell a horse to 3 different people.

Don’t run!!! Take a jet!!! I have a judgement against him too!!! He was billing the actual owner, getting paid, and not sending it to me. How I found out? I didn’t get paid for months…called the license office asked for the number of the guy the horse was running under as owner, called him, and he faxed me every bill that he had paid to M.B.!!! And get this… M.B. jacked up the day rate…And I’m sure he sounded like just the nicest guy on the phone!! And he loves to sell horses on Handride.com as Roosevelt Stable…and has never laid eyes on any of these horses he has for sale…and you want a good laugh? go to the site and you gotta read the descriptions he gives on all these horses!!! And doesn’t own them, or probably even know what state they are in…Boy it’s a good thing when can ask questions and get valuable info!!! Maybe he won’t be able to burn too many more people.

BEWARE!!! I know sooooo many people who have been burned by this guy!!! A lot of my lay up clients bought horses from him, got one race before they found out what true cripples they were and either tried to send them back and get money back, or they came here for rest and rehab if Mark would not refund their money. Any time a former client calls me about a horse listed by Roosevelt Stable I say RUN and don’t look back. He is famous for using pictures of the horses sire in his Handride pictures and it is amazing how people are dumb enough to think thier horse is going to look just like that picture of it’s sire. DUH! Then they get the horse and hey, it doesn’t look like the one in the picture. Go to Canter and see what’s there. Sarah

How can this happen?

Hw can this guy keep getting away with this? Have people reported him to the sites that he advertizes on so they can ban him? Evidently he is not a trainer, so the race tracks can’t do anything, but sheesh, sounds like he’s had plenty of legal judgements against him. Can anyone who is currently sueing him contact the other folks who were scammed so that he can get a harsher judgement for some type of fraud? Wow - glad the OP asked - hopefully she will be spared getting scammed.

He makes himself judgement proof, everthing in someone elses name. He has been doing this since the 70’s when I was a kid. He would just move around when things got hot. I remember one time the constables were at New Holland looking for him for child support. So he is a dead beat dad too.

It isn’t bad enough that he screws over horse people? Dead beat Dads deserve the worst you can do to them.

I’m just beyond thankful that he won’t be at Suffolk anymore!!

Amen to that.

Report Bliss

Bliss has been ruled off Suffolks Downs track, as of Oct, for selling horses to known slaughter buyers. Bliss is a licensed owner, therefore, can be sanctioned for ethical breeches. I encourage ALL those with paid and unpaid judgements to contact Pennslyvania Racing Commission at 717-783-2320 and report your successful judgements. They can pull his license until paid and if sufficient numbers of cheated persons call - he might have his license revolked forever. The PA Racing Commission can also run a check and inform you of all the states that Bliss is licensed in. Contact all of them. Also, please contact the Pennslyvania Thoroughbred Horsemans Association and report your issues at 215-638-2012. The PTHA can rule the man off the individual tracks, as well. Please folks, for the sake of the horses he is harming, each of you call and file a complaint against Mark Bliss.

I and another owner are considering pressing charges. Anyone else with unresolved issues that might rise to a criminal level, please contact me.

For the lovely person recommending Canter - it is a wonderful site, BUT Bliss advertises horses for sale there, as well. The new 501 c 3 sponsored by the PTHA, Turning for Home, is willing to give references on Canter sellers from PA on request. Their number is the same as the PTHA’s - ask for Barbara Luna. That organization is very new and is adopting off the track retired horses for non-race related activities. Each person cheated by Bliss comes at the cost of a horse needing a second chance.

WOW I knew him from back in 70’s when he was run out of Pa by I think Vince Dugan for being someone who scammed Vince. Which makes him a Master Scammer.
But I have to say I bought a lovely young horse right out of his barn and sold it 12 days later. That horse passed a full vetting x-rays, blood, the works and has remained sound sane and wonderfull.
But subsiquent horses he has offered were crap, and he came to try H/J horse I had for sale. His daughter Molly tried the horse loved him.
Then he back peddled on purchase offering me the once in lifetime opportunity to take horse to WEF @ no expensis to me and sell horse down there.
HA horse had been there and sold for $60K to start with.
I heard if it went on his truck it would never be seen again…

Building a case against Mark Bliss

I am another person that Mark Bliss has stolen from. He stole my TB Gelding, sold him, and never paid me any money for my horse. I also boarded 2 layup horses for Mark Bliss and he wrote me a check and moved his horses and then immediately stopped payment on the check. I also hauled a horse and hay for him and he wrote a bad check for that. This man needs to be stopped and from what I’ve heard from many other people, he has been stealing for years. He’s also known for sending horses to slaughter and selling the same horse to several people. I am pressing charges against him for the theft of my horse. Anyone who has been ripped off by this man, please call the Bedminster Police in Pennsylvania. We are building a case against him and the more people who call and tell their story the better the chances that Mark Bliss will be stopped. The officer at Bedminster Police is Officer Mark Thompson and his number is: 215-795-2972 ext 102. Thanks!

I imagine you are the one who emailed me yesterday with the contact information for this officer. I did not respond because my case was 10 years ago and I don’t have any of the paperwork anymore. I wish you the best of luck, but this asshat is like teflon.

The one that I referenced was in the late 70’s- how the hell old is this jerk, now?
