Tom Selleck wins $187,000 in court battle over horse

Right there with you, girl. Mr. ESG has already been warned that if either one of these gentlemen ever come looking for me, he’s in trouble. Especially Sam Elliott with that voice!

I remeber reading an article about TS back when he’d just started Magnum. He was a real straight arrow - didn’t drink until after his 21st birthday, on a promise to his dad. Played college basketball at UCLA (IIRC), and managed to keep that promise. Pretty cool guy.

Very true. I grew up riding and showing in CT, often seeing Clea Newman and her father Paul at most of the shows. Paul Newman was a pretty famous guy, CT isn’t overly know for having visible movie stars around. (although we have quite a few who live here, you don’t see them often) And at the shows, Paul Newman and his daughter Clea weren’t any different from anyone else. Nobody made a fuss over either one and Mr Newman was very supportive of all riders, often cheering people on he didn’t even know if they were having a great round. Clea acted like every other young rider there and said once that one of her favorite things about showing was that she was “Clea the horse rider” and not “Paul Newman’s daughter.” She had a lovely seat and soft hands too. I think his other two daughters rode also, but Clea was the one who was really into it.
I remember that. Late 80’s maybe. My friend ended up with a pair of her Vogels.

Well, the man is gorgeous, to this day, and he is just flat honorable, as well. I recall reading about how he took his bonus, from Magnum (which I NEVER missed) and spent it on a big party, and over the top gifts for his castmates. He then kept the series going an extra year, to make sure that everyone had that additional $$ to walk away with.

On top of that, after he signed for Magnum, he was offered Indiana Jones, and had to turn it down, because he was contractualy obligated. Turns out, Magnum was delayed in starting, and he would have had time to do the movie. However, Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones, and Selleck IS Magnum, so, methinks no loss there…

Wow!!!

I just read that the case has been settled for $250,000! It didn’t even have to go back to the jury for the punitive damages phase-- the sellers negotiated the figure over labor day weekend, and the judge approved it on Tuesday.

above link not working, here’s another to try:
http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/del-mar/article_cbc56c93-9eb0-5716-80ca-4b65145d9ce2.html

Is the $250,000 in addition to the other award or is that total? (Not that it matters really, just curious how this works.)

It’s $250k total. Excellent settlement I reckon.

In the original article it stated that Tom was represented by George Knopfler, George’s wife Debbie(who is also an attorney) is a dressage trainer and defense attorney Robert Scapa is married to Holly who actively shows and sells jumpers. Lots of equine expertise in that group . It only makes sense that one would hire a lawyer with significant background in this case.

If YOU had an easy $150,000 hanging around, wouldn’t YOU “need” a $150,000 horse? :p
Yes I would!! A dad in our barn just bought a new $130,000 Porsche and the first thing I thought about was the pony I could buy for that much money!!

He aparently had a crush on my mom in Jr. high school. Why couldn’t she have shown just a little interest?

Because then there wouldn’t be you

…and this deceitful and fraudulent sale took TWO YEARS to discern? <<<sigh>>>>:rolleyes::rolleyes::dead:
The Sellecks bought the horse in May 2006. The lawsuit was filed in November 2006.
It took until August 2009 to bring it to trial.

And even then, shortly before the assigned trial date (which had been agreed upon by both plantiffs and defendants), the defendants asked to have the trial delayed even longer, because they had to go to a show.

That idea went over like a lead balloon.

Maybe seller didn’t know the horse was/was not suitable for what the buyer intended- maybe they only had a few minutes to asses him and ‘thought’ he looked suitable?
Zorro’s trainer (one of the defendants) approached the Selleck’s trainer at Indio at the end of January, early February 2006 and said she had a suitable horse for the equitation division.
That’s how it started.

The pre-purchase was done in May 2006.

Where is Zorro now?

If the sellers did anything to that horse like cobra venom injections for nerve blocks, it wouldn’t show up on either the vet records or a PPE, and it would wear off over time. That would be blatantly fraudulent to my thinking.

We don’t know what the testimony was; only that the horse had had injections immediately before the sale. If the injections were of blocking substances (like cobra venom, which is, BTW, infamous at race tracks), then maybe the jury had enough to sustain a verdict.
Wouldn’t just be easier to surgically nerve the horse and not tell the new owners

He was on at least once, I’ve seen the clip. I don’t know about twice but he was not picked on the one I saw.
