Tommy Serio back on Safe Sport list

This sounds rather reactionary. Twice accused leads to the believe that a person is not innocent. Seems somewhat similar to another situation on these boards recently, except not accused, guilty of.

Except it was a 3 word, calmly expressed question, not a novel-length tirade, based on firsthand knowledge of the accused and the circumstances surrounding the accusations. But if that made you feel better about your 13 page character attack, so be it:winkgrin:

I have to wonder what would lead to a 3 year suspension rather than a ban. How is someone a danger to the sport for a few years and then they’re welcome back?

Presuming this is the same ā€œincidentā€ as last time, there are no kids involved, and probably no coercion/violence…just general poor decision making from an adult with some influence over another. Remember this isnt necessarily a court of law, it’s the new standard for professional ethics in sport.

I agree, ā€œa new standard for professional ethicsā€. The equestrian world needs to catch up with the real world. Basically, don’t have sexual relationships with your clients and/or employees.

Has that happened or is it still in the works?

Never mind - I found the answer to my question.

Unless you spent every moment in the company of the accused and his accuser and personally witnessed the circumstances surrounding the accusations, I’m not sure how anyone can be so certain that the allegations are false?

I’m not sure I said the allegations were false. ever. I just said not to assume. I think it’s fair that assuming ANYTHING regarding SafeSport or its workings or facts surrounding cases is completely counterproductive.

What world do you live in?? The way the equestrian world is right now is the abnormal world. Now don’t touch, don’t watch your horse show and certainly don’t talk to each other or you’ll get kicked off the grounds.
it’s not how you play the game , it’s whether you win or lose. I’ve lived by that rule for a long time.

I gather it’s doping? In all sports that leads to suspensions or fines, but not lifetime bans.

Suspensions for bad behavior that presume that a person can change their ways are not original to SafeSport.

SafeSport doesn’t do doping. Only harassment, intimidation, bullying, sexual misconduct, rape, molestation, etc.

The article says, "Hunter trainer and rider Tommy Serio was added to the U.S. Center for SafeSport’s suspension list. Serio, who runs Summerfield LLC in Aberdeen, North Carolina, is suspended for three years starting May 18, 2020, for an ā€œintimate relationship involving a power imbalance, sexual misconduct.ā€Ā

They’re more than just allegations at this point. After its investigation, SS has found the allegations of misconduct to be credible. That sounds fairly mild, but SS uses terminology parallel to but different from the criminal justice system, for example ā€œrespondentā€Ā instead of ā€œdefendantā€Ā. SS finding the allegations to be credible is the equivalent of the courts finding a defendant to be guilty. He still can appeal the decision on either the validity of the finding of misconduct, or on the appropriateness of the sanction.

The SS process has enough credibility with me, that at this point, I assume that there was misconduct.

Has he, or the lawyer, indicated whether they will take up the option to appeal?

@Lucassb

That is one gorgeously conformed horse in your avatar. Is that a horse you own or a famous stallion I should recognize?

That is ā€œSpecialā€ and he belongs to Lucassb. Isn’t he a beauty?

Awww, thanks, @YankeeDuchess . He’s not a stallion  One of the boys that lives in my backyard and totes my amateur self around. He’s an 8 year old Self Made/Londonderry and a heart horse.

Anyone hear anything more about the GM appeal? Just curious as this news reminded me.

He lost the appeal
