Too hot and sticky for jeans...

This whole horse thing is the DW’s passion - not mine. Against my better judgement she has gotten me to ride. This past weekend it was entirely too hot and the humidity was so high that it was less than comfortable - and frankly difficult - to ride in bluejeans.

I’m usually a function over fashion guy but I understand there are “rules” defining each discipline of riding. We camp and trail ride. I have a western saddle and I wear cowboy boots - and frankly the breaches w/English boot look isn’t really for me - what do you recommend for men’s riding pants?

There are certainly stretchy boot cut riding pants with or without full seat that look like jeans in outline. They come in denim colors for sure. I think they are more common in saddleseat country. I haven’t seen them IRL just on line , but if I start riding western I will try to get some.

Other than that, you could experiment with lighter weight “street” fashion like maybe cotton army style pants? I don’t know if they would offer enough protection from the saddle.

When I was a teenager I was capable of riding all day in a Western saddle in short shorts and sneakers but I find I am considerably less durable now. On the other hand, maybe baggy khaki knee length shorts would work, if they didn’t look too goofy with the cowboy boots? A lot may depend on how overall comfy your saddle is, and even what material it is made out of. And whether you ride through brush, or rattle snakes.

You might try bootcut breeches. They have the look of a pant but stretchy and go over your western boots. They are sooooo much more comfortable than jeans. I ride in the Kerrits brand and have a denim colored pair.

I always ride in shorts as I can’t stand wearing long pants once it gets about 70 degrees. They make a riding sneaker so you have a heel of sorts. I ride in an english saddle or endurance.

My husband wears these.

Anti-Monkey Butt powder. TMI, I know, but this stuff really works to absorb sweat.

My work uniform used to be casual twill pants (Lee is my favorite brand for those) and a polo shirt. Once the pants got a little worn or stained, I used them to ride in. They’re a lot cooler and more comfortable for trail riding in a western saddle than jeans.

And I’ll also endorse Anti-Monkey Butt Powder. It’s great stuff. A motorcycle guy once told me that without Anti-Monkey Butt Powder, he could never manage long bike rides.

Check out hiking pants for men-- lots of summer-weight, stretchy fabrics, since hikers need good mobility and protection from rocks/brush, but also have to deal with hot temps.
I love Kuhl stuff and they have this offering that may be worth a try:

Kuhl sizes tend to run a bit small, in my experience, so order up a size if in doubt.

Columbia has a lot of good options, too. Here’s one to check out: https://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Silver-Ridge-Cargo-Pant/dp/B077V4KCT2/ref=zg_bs_2420153011_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=W6V7TR0MXBSGTRMAG0YF

I was thinking Kuhl’s as well… The ones I have won’t go over my boots and I don’t know of a store where they have much of a selection.

I think I need to make a trip to Duluth Trading and a Columbia store and see what I can find.

My hope was to find a similar source to Kerrits that made exactly as you described - bootcut breeches - for men. So far all I’ve seen on equine sites is either full on breeches with a skinny leg or denim/canvas in a boot-cut.

Have you gone into the saddle seat sites? By which I mean shops catering to people who ride Saddlebred and Tennesee Walker horses. Whole different thing than either Western or English riding. Anyhow they show in boot cut jodhpurs. The saddle seat discipline is most common in the old South where the horses originated on plantations, rare elsewhere, so Kentucky Tennesee Georgia etc.

I ride in Duluth Breezeshooter pants. They rock!
