Doing a google search for the SGF-1000 (one of the PEDS used by the hideous/disgusting Jason Servis and Jorge Navarro, amongst others, in the current racing scandal), I come across this company, “Medivet Equine,” based in KY, run by some “entrepreneurs,” who apparently make and distribute this crap. Looking at their “News” page, I see that they are advertising the use of another one of their products, “Medivet ACS” by Boyd Martin and Marcia Kulak (who I have never heard of). Anybody know what this stuff is?

The “Director of Sales” for this company - Michael Kegley Jr. - is one of the defendants charged in the federal indictment released yesterday. The indictment states that Mr. Kegley is a “sales agent that works for a firm dedicated to the production of misbranded and adulterated PEDs, including SGF-1000.”

Interesting find, and based on what I have read about the case, the PED is not easily detectable because of the ingredients or another substance the horses are given?

That this company is basically using/borrowing/stealing Taylor Made Farm’s name, but with a little “twist” - “Taylor Made Equine” - wouldn’t that make you, as a trainer go - “wtf, yeah … no thanks…”

Soooo…I just googled “Boyd Martin Medivet ACS.” The results made my head spin. Also found that Phelps Media was doing marketing for the company…and Phelps targets the hunter and jumper crowd. So there are racing, eventing, and hunter/jumper possibilities for a customer base. Such a shame…

The product in question seems to be a serum made from the horse’s own blood, which is treated somehow to induce the production of anti-inflammatory mediators (cytokines) and then injected back into the horse. The company seems to be presenting it as a legitimate therapy to improve a horse’s soundness, but it sounds like they don’t have appropriate FDA approval to do so.

Wonder if the FEI is catching wind of this drug and going to start testing? I guess they didnt have a test in the US before…they probably will now.

The product - a blood protein/peptide serum that is legitimately produced in Australia under a similar name - is basically a counterfeit version that this Tailor Made entity is producing for the Nicholasville, KY distributor.

You do this if you want people to be presented with a legit list of ingredients if they look it up - they’ll get the info from the Australian product.

Meanwhile, you put whatever else you want into the Tailor Made counterfeit product. You can put illegal substances under a seemingly legit name. This happens in human PEDs.

Veterinary products are not very regulated by FDA. Veterinary devices aren’t regulated at all which is why anyone can purchase a veterinary ultrasound or even a veterinary hyperbaric chamber. (I’ve actually called the FDA and discussed these regulations with them.)

A track friend of mine who knows some of the folks said they were doping these drugs with other drugs such as Dex. One horse receiving these products had a dex OD.

The word is that now the FBI has this company’s records as well as the compounder, they can now go after riders/trainers/owners who have been using it to increase horse performance.

Hmmmm. From the MediVet ACS promotional material:

Before putting his horses on MediVet ACS, Boyd Martin took the time to get feedback from other riders who were using the serum, and then consulted his vet, Dr. Keven Keane. He put his top horses on the product in early 2019 with the plan to support their soundness and improve their endurance.

“In 2018 we began talks with Medivet Equine regarding their regenerative product, MediVet ACS, and my curiosity was piqued by the non-steroid option to managing inflammation.

Non-steroid not so much.

But you see how easy it is in this case to think you’re administering something legit.

And it can also be that Tailor Made produces different compounds for different people.

(I once lived on the same block as a famous pizza place that got busted for dealing heroin. How it worked was if you ordered a specific combination of toppings, that would be the code for heroin. They got busted when a legit customer legitimately ordered that pizza and were surprised to open the box and find a bag of heroin.)

Face it, Medivet is a shady operation run by non horse folks without even a true medical director. This doesn’t surprise me.

In the past I had looked through their website and lots of little red flags popped up. They had no real experience on their team in vet med, pharmacy, manufacture. The statements made about their products were too vague and obfuscating. To the layperson, they ticked all the marketing key words. To me they showed no real knowledge.

Sorry for my ignorance, I haven’t followed the racing scandal but as far as eventing, as long as it doesn’t produce a positive drug screen for a substance on the FEI banned list, this is all acceptable correct?

Is the concern that moving forward, due to what comes from the racing investigation, this will become banned or is it banned already?

It is a banned substance, but they administer drugs which hide it alongside it which hide it, I believe?

I thought that the spirit of the rule is that anything given to enhance performance is not legal, whether it tests or not.
