Top picks for Dressage stallion - temperment is a priority

Hi Donella!
Yes I was looking at both DeNiro and Furstenball on my frozen list! She has fine pastern conformation. I know that was a concern with Furstenball … is the verdict out on how his foals pasterns are? Does he have any FEI offspring yet?

Still working on the frozen list. Lol. So many options that it gets overwhelming!

Another stallion known to produce excellent temperament, a great walk/canter, and has several FEI -level offspring is Harvard. His semen is available fresh.

I would definitely contact Karen about Dolany, she can tell you if he would pass on what you are looking for. He is about 20 minutes from me and I need to go out and visit him in person.
I have seen 2 furstenballs and they had very weak hind pasterns and the mare does not have them. Great movement but I wonder about long term soundness of them.

Well, I am a bit old fashioned and I love to stick to proven lines. I am still very tempted with Buddenbrock. I dont think there is anything left which he needs to prove and I have never ever heard that his offspring is difficult. If I am ever breeding again (which I wont do probably) I would strongly consider him…

Hi Jazzy’s mom. That’s helpful info about the Furstenballs. I was wondering about that issue.
If you end up seeing Dolany, let me know what you think. Karen though he would be a very good match. I haven’t been able to find much on his foals here.
Thx!

The issue with Furstenball is not that he has fine pasterns but that they are soft. That being said, he himself has held up fine to hard work and to the strain of breeding many, many mares. Yes, he can pass it on. That is why I said I would only use a mare that has strong hind pasterns. He himself is only 8 or 9 now so no he would not have any FEI level offspring. My bet is that he will be on the top of the FEI sires list in the future.

If you want a stallion super proven to make GP offspring best bet is to pick one of the leading sires in that division. Of the ten, only 7 are available via frozen semen. Of that 7 only four would potentially improve rideability: Deniro, Rubin Royal (iffy semen), Negro and Diamond Hit.

Don Principe has at least 2 at FEI, Doctor Wendell (US National Champion at PSG) and a daughter Duet (also at PSG). I was also going to suggest Don Principe if you want excellent temperament, plus an improvement in the walk. He’s produced horses that have done quite well in dressage. I think he is only available frozen, but I have heard it is very good frozen.

His son at US Nationals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKaiqPLYPSU
My understanding is that plans for DP are to collect him over a short period of time/break in his training, and if you coordinate breeding time you can get cooled fresh with that time period. That’s obviously something you’d want to contact Hilltop to check on for sure…

And his son Dr Wendell is of course also an option, though he isn’t proven yet as an FEI producer, but his bloodlines are.

I have a Devon Heir 2 year old, and she has a fabulous temperament. Very trainable and people oriented, and unflappable without being dull. She was very easy to teach to trailer and I hauled her down last summer from WA to California, and she was so mellow about everything she encountered (goats, dogs, pigs). She’s also got three good gaits and a certain elegance characteristic of most of the Devon Heir offspring I’ll seen.

You have gotten a lot of very good suggrestions, but here are two others to think about that are available via fresh semen: Rosenthal and Dauphin.

Super! Thank you everyone for your suggestions!!

I want to third the Dauphin suggestion and for your frozen list not to be forgotten Belissimo-M and I have heard multiple times he has excellent frozen, he is know for producing temperment and has been on the leading sires list. The offspring I keep seeing from him every one has been quality.
Your mare is super cute! Another thought is contacting DG Bar I believe they have used your mares sire in their program they may be able to give you some advice based on their experience with his lines.

Dolany

I have a Dolany weanling in New Zealand, so was a frozen foal. He has an amazing temperament, been super trainable does everything without fuss. Although his Dam also has this temperament (her Dam has a D line through De Niro), and was fantastic with him from the start. He showed lots of independence early on, so built up confidence in himself - he’s a very kind type more of a go & check something out rather than spook at it. He is tall too.

Olivier (Madeleine/Liz Austin). Hands down best temperament. My mare was very difficult, hot sensitive, and all mare. Just started her now 3yr old colt and I’ve never had an easier horse. He is smart, willing, and really stunning to look at. I’ve known several of his other babies and they all have the same easy going temperament. Liz has trained several of his foals including her soon to be Grand Prix horse Coltrane.

Wow! So many great suggestions!!!:D:D:D
So, in looking at just fresh chilled semen stallions, my initial “short” list is:
Rubignon (Rubinstein/Donnerhall/Pik Solo) who was GP and has produced FEI horses
Freestyle (Florestan/Parademarsch) who was PSG and produced a few (?) FEI horses
Devon Heir (De Niro/Rubenstein) who was PSG and does not yet (?) have any FEI offspring.
Dolany (Donnerhall/Cor de la Bryere) wh owas GP and has produced multiple GP horses.
Olivier (Idocus/Porter) who was GP. Have any of his offspring made it to FEI?
Florianus (Florestan/Damenstolz) who is GP and has produced GP offspring.
Am I missing some other good fresh choices? If I have researched correctly, it seems like the agents for all of these stallions are very good to work with. Presumably semen quality is good too? If anyone has thoughts on that, I’m all ears.
She’s KWPN? Is she registered? What registry are you aiming for?

You say she’s opinionated and smart. I have a Freestyle son who is super spooky and reactive (bred by DSF), but he’s very smart and is a very affectionate guy. Not an amateur horse (I work with pro trainers). My friend has a Freestyle son who is at stud/won the NA 70 day stallion test. I’d say that the mare is very important to how Freestyle comes through with the foal.

You have very many choices of horses who can improve the walk and canter. The rest of her conformation will become important when choosing a sire. I’d start with lines that the mare’s sire breeds well with. Traks are usually improvement horses to other breeds and often the Russian lines produced quality, if untraceable, horses.

Thanks J Lu. She is registered KWPN and I don’t have a strong preference for aiming to a specific registry. Mostly I am interested in just picking a great match for her.
I saw Sir Gregory on the Dreamscape website. He looks like he would be a good possibility as well.
Thanks for the advice! Happy Holidays!!

Another Donnerhall son that has a proven record, sweet temperament, great walk, and has just landed in North America is Dauphin at Aileron Stables. I will be breeding one of my mares to him this year and I have read that his semen is very good.

What was meant by this? Untraceable as in pedigree or something else?
