Hello!
I plan to breed my KWPN mare in 2016 and would LOVE any input any of you might like to share!
The mare is by Ijsslemeer and out of a grand prix dressage mare of Russian trakehner lineage. She is a good mover with good ability to collect and sit. She has clear FEI potential. Good legs and feet. Walk is her weakest gait. I hope to take her all the way to GP and would very much like to have a foal from her.
Her weak point is that she can be difficult temperament wise. She is not hot, just can be strongly opinionated and VERY smart. I love her personality and get along with her fine but I want to be careful not to breed to a stallion that produces difficult temperaments because I would not want to double up on that trait. Lol.
I am looking for a stallion (fresh or frozen) with a track record of producing great temperaments and FEI competitors. Ideally I would also like to improve on the mare’s gaits and breed for a more natural uphill tendency.
She is a maiden mare and I will be doing ET. Any suggestions from anyone? I am open to any registry.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Ellie
Rubignon and Don Principe are the ones I think of for temperament as far as the quality I would consider. Generally Rubinstein and Donnerhall blood are both known for temperament, though of course there are always exceptions.
Thanks! Do you know if either stallion has produced horses that made it to FEI? I realize they were FEI themselves.
It’s hard without seeing your mare. Is she on the heavy side? Long lined or more compact? Do you have a video or pics?
She is very compact. 15.3 hh. Lighter bone. Here is a short video clip of her. I don’t have conformation photos and now she is a fuzzy beast for winter.

Has she been bred before? If so, to who and what did she produce in terms of conformation?
She has not been bred before.

In that case, I would use a stallion that has produced multiple GP dressage horses from a variety of mare types.
I’d also use a stallion with Donnerhall in the pedigree.
A fresh option that I’m becoming more and more impressed with is Devon Heir. I don’t know anything about him other than pedigree. But with the Rubinstein I he may throw a good temperament. I don’t know that, but Rubinstein I is another I’d search out.
What exactly is your mares pedigree?
She is by the Grand Prix Dutch Warbmblood stallion, Ijsslemeer (Gelders type) (Vosmaer/Taxateur/Fresco)
Her dam was imported as a GP riding horse. I have no papers on her but she was Russian Trakehner.
I know it makes it difficult without the breeding. Sorry. Fortunately, both dam and sire were very capable FEI horses and that has come through.
I agree that I would like to breed to a stallion with a track record of producing FEI horses. There are so many tempting, flashy young studs out there but it is definitely smarter to stick with a known producer - especially since there are some unknowns on her side.
anyone have thoughts on the Donnerhall son, Dolany?
I second Donnerhall without a doubt the best line for temperament coupled with the strength for the FEI work, don’t know much about Dolany sorry. Rubenstien in the lines usually means very good temperament and super walk and canter however not usually the scopiest ponies with piaffe/passage and trot work.
I would be recommend taking a look at Romanov. I think there is still frozen semen available.

Don Principe has sired one offspring that has made it to the FEI level, and he is also an approved stallion. Another thought is Dacaprio, who has sired many performance offspring and is known for a wonderful temperament. Freestyle has sired an offspring who made it to Grand Prix, and his offspring are known for good temperament and longer lines, but no Donnerhall. Dauphin has just been imported to Canada, another stallion known for a wonderful temperament who has sired performance offspring.
I totally knew by your video that she was from one of Deb Harris’s stallions. I don’t know the other stallions so well, but I bred to Freestyle twice because I needed better temperament and height with pretty spectacular results. The 7 year old is school piaffe and passage and will show 4th next year. The 5 year old s even nicer. He also has super semen if you don’t have a background of breeding, and Jennifer is wonderful to work with. It’s also a super deal.
I don’t have any Don Principe babies, but I totally agree with Clint. He would be super high on my list for what you’re looking for.
Sir Sinclair. I have an 8 year old homebred out of my KWPN Keur Sport mare. The mare has gelders blood in her on both sides. Her offspring by Sir looks just like him. She is sweet without a mean bone in her body. After every winter off, Potomac Horse Fever and severe ulcers she is schooling most 3rd level movements even with inconsistent work and months off at a time. Sir Sinclair’s oldest offspring are 12. Jim Koford is competing a 10 year old Sir Sinclair gelding, Air Marshall at Grand Prix and is on the cover of the December issue of the USDF Connection magazine. Gwen Poulin just won the USDF Nationals at Grand Prix with William who is owned by Belinda Nairn Wertmann. Sir Sinclair is the only living KWPN Keur stallion in North America. A stallion must produce many quality offspring to receive such an honor.
DP isn’t available fresh. (Or wasn’t last year)

Don Principe has at least 2 at FEI, Doctor Wendell (US National Champion at PSG) and a daughter Duet (also at PSG). I was also going to suggest Don Principe if you want excellent temperament, plus an improvement in the walk. He’s produced horses that have done quite well in dressage. I think he is only available frozen, but I have heard it is very good frozen.
His son at US Nationals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKaiqPLYPSU
For a different alternative, you might want to look at the KWPN Gelders stallion Alexandro P who is available frozen…the Alexandro P in our barn is big and an amazing mover, with the greatest uncomplicated temperament…not sure where Alexandro is in his own dressage career but already has an approved stallion son…
I would maybe go DeNiro with her if you want a good chance of making another GP horse.
Younger stallions that might also work:
Furstenball (this would be my first pick if your mare has strong and correct hind pasterns)
Benetton Dream ( but he makes them BIG)
Lissaro van de Helle (not a super modern type but correct , talented and very good rideability and character)
Wow! So many great suggestions!!!:D:D:D
So, in looking at just fresh chilled semen stallions, my initial “short” list is:
Rubignon (Rubinstein/Donnerhall/Pik Solo) who was GP and has produced FEI horses
Freestyle (Florestan/Parademarsch) who was PSG and produced a few (?) FEI horses
Devon Heir (De Niro/Rubenstein) who was PSG and does not yet (?) have any FEI offspring.
Dolany (Donnerhall/Cor de la Bryere) wh owas GP and has produced multiple GP horses.
Olivier (Idocus/Porter) who was GP. Have any of his offspring made it to FEI?
Florianus (Florestan/Damenstolz) who is GP and has produced GP offspring.
Am I missing some other good fresh choices? If I have researched correctly, it seems like the agents for all of these stallions are very good to work with. Presumably semen quality is good too? If anyone has thoughts on that, I’m all ears.
