WE sold our first 2+ 20 yrs or so ago and recommended then and still do a least a 3/4 truck. We prefer diesel with the towing pkg and NOT the low speed rear end. 4 wheel drive if you think you’re going to get stuck someplace. We put 350000 miles on a 2 wheel drive and never got stuck. Be sure you have the transmission and engine oil coolers. If it’s an older GM model you might want to add some SuperSprings or Timbrens or something to help the squat. A brake controller of course. We always prefer the long bed but you can make do with the short bed. We like the extended cab for all our stuff but you can make do with a regular cab. There are lots of 3/4T used trucks out there, you have to look a little for them but they’re there.
