Just wanted to reach out about your post re: shoeing advice (since we’re both in the LA area). I would definitely ask who your vet recommends for shoeing, and go from there. I agree with you that barefoot is really just not an option for most horses in SoCal (that a lot of people in the rest of the country don’t understand).

Also, if your farrier is who I think it is (and how many female farriers are there in the area), she’s very good, and one of the best you’re going to find (which was again confirmed to me by vet last week). She’s one of the few that spends the time and money on continuing education (which I think is super important), and consistently works with vets to use radiographs in her shoeing decisions.

Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for your note! I trust vets roughly as much as I trust farriers, I generally only use them for vaccines and the occasional emergency stuff. I just started using McKnight and so far he’s been a delight, but when it comes to shoeing I don’t have anyone I particularly trust. He signed off on these wedges with a caution to pass on a couple comments to my farrier.

I’m using Chris Eide, who I believe may actually have what it takes to get through this situation. I’m quite cautious to make sure that I keep her name off the thread so it doesn’t turn into anything negative for her. I figure you either were referring to Chris or possibly to Beth Carter. I also think Beth is a great farrier from a technical skills perspective, but she let my horse go to eight weeks on the second shoeing and was just generally so hard to work with that I fired her.

Will keep you posted, and thanks for sayin’ hey!
