Can you tell me about Pilot Hill, Ca? My husband is inheriting a farm there. We currently live in the Midwest. I am dressage rider that also likes to trail ride. I started a thread in Off Course about it. I am looking for as much input as possible.
I don’t know the area all that well - it is on the north side of “the divide”, almost into Placer county. But I do know people who live in the divide - it is a kind of remote area, hard to access in and out, narrow winding roads. So you would be relatively close to Hwy 80 (which you can take down to Sac), but still not super easy to actually GET to 80. Pretty easy access to LOTS of trail riding - there are a ton of serious trail and endurance riders that use that area for riding. Pretty close to Tevis Cup, too. If you are into trail riding, you’ll love it, tons of trails with easy parking. For some of them, you pay a parking fee ($3 to $5 if I remember right).
Probably the closest trainer is Jennette Scanlon - she and Volker Bromman work out of a place in Newcastle. He is straight dressage, she is dressage and eventing (both are quite good - Volker is well known, but I actually think she’s just as good, just lacking the German accent).
It is a horsey area, but probably more of the endurance type. The things to check into -
-does it have high speed internet (that can be an issue in some of our more remote areas, ask me how I know).
-insurance (it is going to be a high risk fire area, insurance may be pricey)
-water - some of the foothills areas are lacking water - if you are near the river, you probably have water, if you are higher up, maybe an issue.
Then look at the actual drive to get to civilization. Auburn isn’t that far away, and Roseville and Rocklin are pretty good sized cities with real hospitals and everything.
Hope that helps.
