AAARRRHHHHH. my computer flicked off and I lost my 1st post.
LSS: Petey is also allergic to a lot of things. Sweet Itch was a major suggestion, so I have been trying out my special fly spray. There is not a horse who hasn’t benefitted from it (I know — double negative…)
Since you have a problem, and it is unlikely you live near me, I will give you my special remedy. Even if it does not work on the bumps, it is a wonderful fly spray for all horses.
- Get a bottle of fly spray with the most active ingredients of permethrins, pyrethrins, and that other ingredient that the good fly sprays have (I am at the house and am too hot to go out to go to the barn to look for the name. Some have 98% “other” and other sprays only have 92% “other”. It is amazing how different they are. The best is not always the most expensive. Add it to a 1-gallon bottle.
- Get a spray with just permethrins. Add 1/2 of the spray to the 1-gallon bottle.
- (and this is the "secret part) Add 1 bottle of Neem Oil. It can be found in the gardening section – its main use is on flowers which attract the ‘no-see-ums’, which is what horses with bumps usually have. Add it to the 1-gallon bottle.
- Spray the whole horse – especially the midline, the root of the mane and the dock of the tail
- Fill up the rest of the 1 gallon bottle with water.
SHAKE WELL every time you use it since the products do not stay mixed together.
I use it 1/x a day, but it does not hurt if you use it more often. It is an excellent fly spray for regular horses, too.
The mixture (above) will make up 3+ spray bottles. So, even though it will cost c.$50 to make, it is actually very cost efficient.
PS: THIS WILL NOT GET RID OF EXISTING BUMPS. IT JUST PREVENTS NEW FLIES FROM BITEING.
I am asking you not to give out the recipe. If others want to buy some, please refer them to me. Somehow I will make a business from this product.
