Need some help! I have a 3 (4 next month) year old Quarter Horse. She is extremely smart and we’ve been making great progress in the three weeks that I’ve owned her.
She was started as a barrel horse and I’ve taken a step back to really teach her quality foundation and proper flat work. We’ve worked on bending and moving off my leg properly.
She was finicky with her mouth from the get go and hated contact ( her teeth have been done and saddle checked).
She started accepting contact well, but the last two days have been a nightmare and she’s throwing her head horribly. We ride in an open field where I currently keep her, and i believe it’s stemming from being sour and wanting to go back to the gate where she knows she’s “done working”. The head tossing was out of control today and i just worked in small circles and a whole lot of serpentines to keep her focused and working.
Shes goes in a happy mouth three ring with a copper roller. No nose band for the time being.
In tryinf to stay away from artificial aids so she learns how to go like a real horse, while using her hind end on her own.
Any advice with babies throwing a tantrum and throwing their head?
*** I am an English rider with an extensive background in the hunter/jumpers. I’m riding her in a western saddle, but training her English’s style to accept contact as that’s the route we’re going to that. The western saddle is for the sole purpose of mounted patrol as she’s going to be my mounted horse with the police department part time.
She really is a great baby, we’re just hitting a small bump in the road, which like I said, I believe to be stemming from sourness.
