Anyone have a topical medication they’ve found is comparable to Granulex for proud flesh?
I use DermaCleanse and add DMSO to it for more strength but haven’t found anything as good as Granulex and unfortunately it was discontinued.
Thoughts??
Recently had a horse open a wound on the front of his hock.
Bandaging was not an option as there is so much movement, and he had the beginning of proud flesh at the edges.
I started treating with Corona, when that didn’t seem to help switched to ichthamol.
Took a couple weeks, but the wound closed & no proud flesh.

You coat the proud flesh with a very light layer (a light smear on your finger is enough), bandage, and the next day everything you coated is crusted up and dead. Remove the dead tissue, blot clean and dry, reapply and do it all over again. It removed a walnut-sized knob of proud flesh in 4 days.
The only problem I had was that it worked a little too good. If the bandage shifted and smeared the product on healthy tissue, the healthy tissue became inflamed and raw. This became a problem with my pink-skinned guy and the challenging location of his wound, so I had to discontinue at the very end. But otherwise, this stuff is amazing.

I have a filly with a wire cut around her pastern. (Struck at another horse on the fence line and got her leg caught on the single strand of hot wire inside of a 4 board fence). It was deep enough that the extensor tendon was visible and exposed but not damaged.
It was initially stitched but she ripped them out so we are healing by second intention. I have had challenges wrapping the area and keeping the bandage from shifting through the day and the bandages ends up rubbing her.
Switched to a non stick pad over Derma-Cleans/DMSO and then sheet cotton to pad it and then vet wrap over that wrapping around her foot. 🤦🻔♀ï¸
I just have a bit of proud flesh that doesn’t want to dry up and I’m out of options for stronger stuff than what I’m using.
I’ve found Wound Dust to be completely unhelpful for proud flesh as you actually need something to eat the tissue, not just dry it.
I’m going to give the proud off a go and see How we do. Nothing to loose!
Equiaide is without question the best stuff I have ever seen for proud flesh. Wonder dust is good stuff, but Equiaide knocks it out of the park.
Or you could try something one of my vets told me about and I used - it worked great. Granulated sugar mixed with Betadine into a paste, apply, cover, leave overnight, keep applying til wound is healed. But if you must spend money…:lol:…the equi-aide and the stuff from VV work great.
Back in the day the two products often recommended for this were sugardine (Shiloh’s recipe) and Adolph’s Meat Tenderizer (currently selling for $2.48 at Walmart). Form a paste, bandage and call it a day. I do know of folks who used to sprinkle the Adolph’s right into the wound and bandage, but I don’t know if I’d do that. Best to ask you vet on that one.
Vets usually prescribe a steroid ointment such as Panalog for proud flesh.
If it’s mild proud flesh (not yet vet-debridement-worthy) I was initially skeptical about a vet-recommended technique: alternate daily bandages with an antimicrobial ointment of your choice and an over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment. I only had to do the hydrocortisone twice before it was under control and I could just bandage with salve.
I recently had excellent results using a paste of manuka honey and turmeric powder
I have used Trypzym V spray for decades on woulda to prevent and treat proud flesh. Once it’s healing properly you need to switch to something else, but it’s awesome.
