Tough work pants in smaller sizes

I practically live in the Duluth firehose pants–the regular ones in the summer and the lined ones in the winter. I love them, they’re great, and they hold up really well to the crazy projects that are never ending.

But I lose a pants size or two every year. They’re no longer fitting and there are no more sizes to go down to. Serious bummer for me. I guess I could have them tailored? But–let’s be serious here, haha–that is time and effort and is probably never going to happen.

Are there any similar women’s work pants out there that either go down to 0 or are just smaller fitting? Jeans don’t work for me, I just shred them. Plenty of pockets are a plus, but definitely have to have one on the thigh.

I’ve seen a lot of sturdy work pants for men, but finding them for women is just so hard. The rise on mens pants is generally way too long for me, even if they do fit otherwise.

Filson’s may fit differently; https://www.filson.com/women/pants/womens-canvas-slim-leg-pants.html#sku=20119697-fco-009104013

Carhartt do them - but are sold out !

Interesting, thanks for the ideas!

My calves can’t do the slim fit, unfortunately, and the carhartts don’t have the pockets I need. But really nice to see there are SOME options out there.

A friend shared these today: https://dovetailworkwear.com/collections/pants/products/day-construct# which look like they might be worth a shot. Sizes down to 000 AND they say they run small, which should give me some runway. Too bad they don’t come in a lined version

I have the Carhartt Hayden and they come in smaller sizes and have thigh pockets

That style looks to be discontinued but they have equivalents: https://www.carhartt.com/category/women-work-pants

Thank you! Another vote for carhartts, I should be able to try them on locally somewhere

Consider trying kids-sized versions.
I buy kids Winter waterproof boots from TSC. I wear a Women’s 8.
They’re cheap, last me a couple years & do the same job as the $$$ Muck brand.
Same for sweatpants - my size 12 translates to Boys & I get Husky if I can for roominess.

I wish I could find boys work pants! If Duluth made them, I’d be all over it!

Tough work pants for kids might be even harder to find than tough work pants for women

I do a lot of small men’s stuff and boys stuff because it’s usually tougher stuff. Even with Duluth–their men’s pants are SO much beefier than the women’s. Frustrating, especially from a company that claims to know women work too. :-/

These guys do work pants strictly for women: https://redantspants.com/shop/. I’ve been intending to get a pair–came recommended by equine vet and tech.

Thank you! Those look like a neat option, and I think I see pockets in the right places! If you do try them, I’d love to know what you think.

Just blundered into these; https://dovetailworkwear.com/collections/maven/products/maven-nofade?variant=32890540261410

Sizes down to 000

Yeah, thank you, I found those too–the Day Construct pants look like they’d be a good option for me. I linked those in my reply to your earlier

Have you tried using suspenders/braces to keep your pants up? I prefer those over belts and it means your waist band doesn’t have to be exact…

I’ve thought about it! I got lost on Amazon when I went to go buy some  Do you recommend any in particular? Yeah, I’m struggling with the belt on my hip bones–so uncomfortable!

I just just my very old Mork rainbow suspenders…

Oh my goodness, those Dovetails are so cute! If you are going to have to live in workwear or breeches, it would be nice to look good and have enough pockets.

So I picked up the dovetails on sale at black friday and they arrived today.

They’re really nice! Tons of pockets, fabric feels great (more like the men’s duluth firehose fabric tbh!) I’m currently wearing a 2 in Duluth and ordered 4 in Dovetail since the site says to size up. Fit is good! Plenty of room to keep going down if necessary.

Lots of nice details like reinforcement at the pockets and heels.

We’ll see how they hold up, but they look good out of the box!

(BTW, I’d also like to point out that the Dovetails go up to 24–nice to see inclusive sizing! Second day in them and still pleased!)

I used to just wear the men’s flannel lined carhartts in their smallest size, and put up with the fact that they were large enough to put on over another pair of pant. Which, I did on many occasions when I did not work from home and had to make a made dash to deal with with something - on they went over my work attire.

Then I got a pair of boy’s carhartts from my nephew and they were a bit tight in the hips and also a bit short - so cold air would blow up the pant legs and THAT is not fun. But they were also flannel lined and didn’t fall off.

Then I decided to just deal and buy a pair of women’s carhartts. And after one style that was awful, the sort of regular work pant style is perfect. Comfortable, fit normally (but I can put on long underwear when needed) and I don’t look like a homeless waif.

Happy to hear that you like the Dovetails. I took advantage of the Black Friday sale a couple of years ago and bought the Britt in indigo/denim as well as the Day Construct in brown. I’m at the opposite end of the size spectrum but loved the contoured fit. Usually, I end up with saggy, baggy because I can’t stand tight fit but these are really nice. Unfortunately, I can only wear them during the winter months because all the pockets and double layering make them way too hot for summer. The upside is that they last longer.
Enjoy!
