Toxic Dog Treats

Just caught the end of it on the news, so I had to go look it up. I had only caught the end, so I was curious what they were describing.

FDA investigating toxic dog treat claim

It doesn’t list a name for the treats … Which worries me. If it is a possibility of them being toxic, why not let people know?

I believe, although I can not swear to it, that it has to do with chicken jerky treats that had the chicken sourced from China that is contaminated. There are several brands involved I believe.

Here’s a facebook page about animal treats from China.

And a website:

I feed Cheerios, Rice Chex and a different flavor of dog food as treats.

Over the years, there have been MANY recalls. Le sigh.

That is why my dogs insist on BACON!

Fry a bunch up, blot the grease out, chop it up, freeze it. Rotten, rotten dogs.

It’s very easy to make your own chicken jerky in a dehydrator. Probably cheaper too if you buy chicken breasts on sale.

I feed freeze-dried raw. It’s also very easy to break up the patties into little treats. One bag goes a long way if just used for treats.

Some brands implicated are Waggin’ Train and Milo’s Kitchen. I would advise staying away from any of the jerky treats (Waggin’ Train has ham and duck as well) of any brand until we know more about the issue. I’m not sure about the Meijer-brand jerky treats, but I plan to find out.

US made non-jerky treats that I know of currently: Milk Bone, Pedigree, Sargeant’s Barkery, Better Than Ears, Rachael Ray, and Newman’s Own.

Some of them state “Made in the USA” on the packages, others you need to call the 800 number to find out.

this is why I make and sell my own Goodies.

(Shameless plug)

And they are FABULOUS

There’s a link right at the end of that article

I iwll also say, made in usa is uaually good, but you need to make sure the ingredients were not sourced in China…this has been cause for alot of confusion on the part of consumers, and illness in many pets.

Lots of problems with a number of dog food/ dog treats from China. I only buy all-american edibles for the pooches now

I just make all my own dog treats. Cheap cut of meat, cook it, chop it up into little bits. You know where it came from, you know what’s in it, and the pups sure are motivated to work for it. Plus you’d be shocked at how expensive most dog treats are if you are silly enough to spend time calculating how much they are per pound and compare that to how much cheap meat goes per pound.

It’s not just dog treats from China…

China is reputedly the only source for taurine and Vitamin C in commercial dog foods. FYI
