tracking device for riding alone?

i don’t use a cell phone, so am wondering if there is some sort of tracking device one can wear when out alone?..i don’t do dangerous stuff, and always wear a helmet, but would feel more comfortable with something to enable family to locate me…

is there such a thing?

I don’t usually ride alone but do ride in remote areas where cell service is spotty. My daughter bought me a SPOT gps locator. The first year I paid extra for the tracking ability. People could sign into my account and view my tracks as I rode. I didn’t renew that service. Just felt it wasn’t worth the extra $50/year. I do have the basic service where I can press certain buttons and a message will be sent to listed phones and e-mail accounts.

Thankfully haven’t had to use it. It’s something you might check into for yourself.

https://www.roadid.com/ , which also has the eCrumb app that tracks you, and can be set to alert others if you stop moving for a long time (you set the time):

The iPhone Find My Friends allows anyone who you approve to track you from their iPhone or IPad. If you have good cell phone service, it is a great tracker.

If you Google “personal emergency tracking device” you’ll find a whole bunch of options. I even looked at satellite phones. Verizon offers this https://www.vzwsatellite.com/products/purchase/isatphonepro If you go to Blue Cosmo you’ll find other options. These are pricy but if you are true, regular “out of service” person then you have to decide how much your health, safety, and welfare is worth!!!

I use RoadID. It’s great because it sends a text with a link that the recipient can use to track you, and it will send a warning text if you are stationary for more than 5 minutes.

thanks all!..never realized there were so many options

tracking

Get a Life Alert and wear it when u ride----comes with a GPS…priceless

My friend uses some Garmin GPS device and her husband can see where she’s at via computer… sorry I couldn’t be more helpful but you guys posted some great ideas!

Samsung phones come with lookout, which can be used to track you. Even if your phone is dead, it’ll record the last location of the phone.

I used RoadID today. It worked perfectly and alerted my husband and son when I stopped too long at the lake. It was pretty great - nice feeling of security while riding solo.

It’s cheaper to just get a phone. You have tp pay somebody a fee to have live tracking, you may as well have all the other benefits which are for the most part free.

The problem with that is that some areas of the U.S. have no effective cell phone coverage. My barn is one of them!!! There’s a mountain between the barn and cell tower.

Most cell phone tracking programs work off the GPS, not cell service.

With or without a tracking device, you should make a “ride plan” and leave it with someone. Airplanes with all of their electronic equipment file a flight plan.

in group:

Description (clothing, horse):
Estimated time of departure:
Route/Trail:
Estimated time of return:
Emergency contact: (not the same as who to call in case of an accident, the # to call in case you need help on the trail)

If you are riding on Saturday and nobody will miss you until work Monday morning, you will be in serious trouble by then. Your ride plan will give the search and rescue teams a definitive search area to concentrate their resources-they will find you faster.
