Woodbine is now allowing owners to come see their horses run. Strict protocols, not allowed to access paddock, or offices, still no entry to barns, Hopefully that will change in the near future as Ontario sees CV-19 numbers continuing to drop.
I can’t say how this affects the industry as a whole, but here’s some early data for NYRA’s efforts.
Colonial Downs temporarily cancelled (Tuesday and Wednesday cards) after Jockey Trevor McCarthy tested positive for COVID-19 Aug 11.
Trevor reported experiencing “flu-like symptoms” late Saturday night. Trevor had attempted, but was unable to, access COBID-19 testing on Monday. After testing positive on Tuesday, he was taken off his mounts (although feeling better) due to the positive test. Trevor is currently the leading rider in the jockey standings.
Colonial Downs is awaiting input from Virginia Department of Health for further guidance on how to proceed.
Turf Paradise (Phoenix AZ) just cancelled their 2020-2021 meet, scheduled to start in November, due to challenges related to COVID-19.
Colonial Downs just announced that they are ending their meet early (they had 9 more days to run) after jockey Trevor McCarthy tested positive for Covid and they subsequently tested the rest of their jockey colony.
I think a wise decision for Colonial Downs as much as I hate to see a meet end early.
