Trading Your Land Rover For Micra (of the equine type)

Recently I’ve downsized from my 17hand brontosaurus WB to a (will be) 14hand WBxWelsh. (And a dainty OTTB who’s having downtown and being pasture buddy).

Any other adults out there actually loving riding a shorty?

I almost want to say it is more fun than an actual horse :grimacing:

My horses are a 14h QH & a (retired) 14.2 Arab. Getting on anything over 16h just isn’t enjoyable to me for a variety of reasons. I like small & compact…and thankfully I am small & compact enough myself to make that work very well lol. Not to mention that if I fall off I’m a lot closer to ground…

I went from my 17.2 hand homebred to 15 hands of round Appaloosa 18 years ago and loved it. So much less horse to keep collected and going under you.

The ground is closer as well but in the event we part company it hurts just as much

I have a young gelding as well and he is the same size as the mare and well built so that turned out well too.

I feel the same! So glad to hear I’m not alone in the pony camp, I do love my OTTB as well but I get on the pony and he matches off, it just feels right

I’ve totally drunk the pony kool-aid. Used to have a 15.3hh TB (okay, so not that huge) and have since downsized to a 10hh wee thing.

Next purchase will be a med or lrg pony that I can drive with my daughter. The big guys are lovely in their own right but I’m at a place now in my life where “less is more”!

Congrats to the OP on what sounds like a new addition to the herd

ABSOLUTELY: Sports car instead of a bus. I loved riding my Fjordie boy. Now I’m back on a tall, ribby TB mare and it is Not The Same.Oleoverfences.

I rode section c welsh cobs for 16 years before I got my fjord :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:. Pony life!

Edit to add, my mare growing up was a whopping 14.2 as well!

Omigosh, your ponies are seriously stunning!!! This makes me feel much better about my new obsession

They all have been a blast! The cobs in particular were quite handy on a jump course too. Shorter bodies that can turn on a dime can save you some seconds!

OH! I want that little dark bay of yours!

She is an absolute doll. My friend that owns her has her in my trainers junior lesson program now and she is wonderful with the kids. She makes them earn their successes but is very forgiving and a wonderful teacher. The little stinker was at a schooling show earlier this year and literally stuck one hoof over the dressage arena just to test things out with her kid :woman_facepalming:t2::joy:.

@FjordBCRF Do you mind asking how tall you are? Because you fit that Fjord perfectly!

I’m a long legged 5’6! Not short by any means but that fjord barrel is great for taking up leg

I went from holsteiners to breeding welsh cobs a few decades ago. My breeding program has since been retired but I will never intentionally own anything over 15.2 hands. I had larger warmblood mares who I intended to breed to my stallion (Welsh) but they were sold when I disbanded/retired my program. I’m only 5’2" so I don’t need anything ‘big’. I still own a 13 hand section C Welsh pony of cob type who successfully carried me through PSG and carried me through many competitive trail events. He is now retired at age 21 but still the cutest thing around imo. I currently compete at third/fourth level on my Welsh Cob gelding, a homebred and fourth generation of my breeding program. He is 14.2 hands. I also own and compete my Morgan who is 15.1 and considered ‘tall’ in my barn. He fits me well but so glad it looks like he’s finished growing  I can honestly say I never looked back after I ‘downsized’.

I went from 17.2 and about as long as a city block to a much more compact 16.1hh. I actually wanted smaller, but it didn’t work out that way!

So much easier to keep clean, sound and collected. And the ground is so much closer!
