Traffic Cones for Arena Work

I was looking into traffic cones to use for arena work and wondered if anyone had any experience on where to buy them? What is the best size that everyone has found to use/ where did you get yours? Links if you have them please!

The ones I am currently looking at are 18" from ULINE. I don’t need letters on them, just plain cones. I just want to make sure that they are durable enough to be stepped, light enough to move around and heavy enough to stay put when there is a breeze….TIA. ?

Are you looking at these ones at Uline?

If so I have some (in the green) and they are very durable. I think I got some of the 28" and 36" ones because I needed taller but I would assume the 18" would be the same

Home Depot-http://www.homedepot.com/p/3M-18-in-Orange-PVC-Non-Reflective-Traffic-Safety-Cone-90128-00001/100025031

I just bought mine at Home Depot. I got mine at the store, but they are available on line. They are fine, come in different sizes and are weighted. They stay put in the Tehachapi Wind.

Yes looking at the ULINE ones. The non reflective 18". Will that be tall enough? (http://www.uline.com/Product/ProductDetailRootItem?modelnumber=S-7877)

The company I work for sells them in a variety of sizes. I bought the medium sized ones to use for both dressage and trail competitions. I thought the quality was very good and they are nice and heavy.

What exactly are you wanting to do with them?

I got the tallest ones because I was setting up for some mounted games so it needed to be tall enough that you could reach down and pick up a tennis ball off of the top. I got the next size down to cut the very top off so I could slide a PVC pole into it that would be tall enough to play the cup game

Get some taller ones too. The things have a million uses in an arena. The bigger ones are easier to see and you can use them either upright or on their sides to prop the ends of X rail or caveletti poles on. Use them in various patterns in front of your tired schooling jumps too, livens things up a bit and constantly changing sizes and how they are positioned keeps the exercises fresher for horse and rider…might even reveal some holes in the training.

Right now I am mainly looking to do some weaving through the cones and to do serpentine patterns with changing canter leads in the middle. I went to a show and found that we were a little out of control and I wanted to work on the trot canter bend at home.

No jumping in my immediate future but I do like your idea about putting them with everything to change things up!

I got mine at Tractor Supply.

Ordered the 18" orange ones through ULINE. Work regularly orders things from there so I got to avoid shipping costs! They are 3lbs each as opposed to the 29lbs each I found on another site… ( I can’t imagine hauling 10+ cones at 29 lbs each around the pasture… lol.

We will see how they old up. Thanks for all your input!

We have a bunch that read “PennDOT” on them…

Honestly, I don’t remember where they came from but there they are. I’m pretty sure a friend gave them to us, I know we didn’t “borrow” them. They are pretty old and trashed…

I ended up ordering them through ULINE. They are about 3 lbs a piece and I can carry 10 of them around the pasture to set them up with no issue.

I put a few out in the pasture to see what the horses thought of them and every time I come back out they are knocked over so they must not be too scary…

Anyone have any good exercises that involve cones? I am going to work and weaving through them and also using them for serpentines with simple lead changes.

Hey, my husband works at Uline and he says that they should stand up to being kicked around by a horse just fine, but he says that if the horse is being worked in bell boots or if the horse has bar shoes then there may be a very, very slight chance of the horse catching its leg on the cone. So take that as you will.

Thanks for the warning! I thankfully haven’t needed to use bell boots and my horses aren’t shod. I did have to pick up my lunge lines a little bit since they almost caught on the top of the cones…

Other than that they have been working really well. I left a few out in the pasture to see what they thought and when I come back out they are always knocked over…

I’ve worked with a number of horse trainers and the advice they would consistently give was the bigger the better. Of course, that assumes cost is no issue.

This advice is not coming from experience, btw.

When I was coming home after many many drinks, and no I was not driving, we drove past a bunch of road work. I remember my coach saying she wanted some… So the local construction company was then missing four or five, and the riding school had gained four or five. This happened at 2 am.

As a disclaimer, I do not condone stealing cones.

ULine was expensive compared to other places.

CrowdControlStore.com has them lots cheaper (I think – I did not write down all the prices; I just noted the cheaper stores.)

This store also has “starter kit dressage rings” — but note that these rings do not come with full sides – they are meant to have open sections between the rails/posts.

EERRRGGHHHHHHH I have prices from other stores, but I seem to have forgotten to write down the names of those stores.

I have also come across 5 gallon buckets with lids (either all white, or in colors or with logos) at several stores. They are about $4 each. If you put some dirt or sand inside they will stay in place.

I like to stay on the safe side of the law! I don’t mind paying for them I just wasn’t sure what I needed. These cones (18") fit just under the lunge line so they work well, any taller and they would catch.

ULINE wasn’t the most expensive I found. I also found that while other places offered cheaper cones their shipping was more expensive or their cones weighed 29 lbs each

I needed these to be mobile since my ‘arena’ is my pasture and the cones from ULINE are only 3lbs each. It was easy for me to put them out and then pick them all back up (or they are durable enough to leave out) when I ride at night.

Also by using ULINE I didn’t have to pay for shipping through my work since they were already ordering other materials…
