Green Lane Park isn’t too far away, although it’s not in Chester County. They even have a horse camp ground there.
The Brandywine Conservancy Laurels preserve is very nice riding and has horse trails. It is used during the ECTRA sanctioned Cheshire CTR on 4/25.

Woodlawn Wildlife Preserve. Sort of Chadds Ford/Wilmington area
Marsh Creek State Park-Downingtown
Valley Forge Park near King of Prussia
French Creek State Park off rt. 23/Chester Co (must visit St. Peters Village while you are there)…Horseshoe trail runs through that area too… great riding
Heres a map of the Chester Co portion:

There are lots of places to ride.
Not in Chester County but close by:
Green Lane Park - Montgomery County
Perkiomen Trail - Montgomery County
Evansburg State Park - Montgomery County
Valley Forge Park - Montgomery County
Horseshoe Trail in Birdsboro, Berks County
Lake Ontelaunee, Berks County
Fairmount Park in Philadelphia has a huge equestrian section for trails. I just moved to the city and have my horse boarded in the at Fairmount Park. I dont know the trails out there, but if you want to ride there let me know… I dont have any trail riding buddies. http://www.fairmountpark.org/Equestrian.asp
It has some good views of the city without actually riding into it, and its really well maintained, so Ive heard.
Bonnie, do you have a link to the website for the Cheshire CTR?
ECTRA Cheshire CTR
They don’t have a web site, but Kim Colket will email all the info to you, rkcolket@verizon.net or I have all the entry and info stuff here on my home computer if you want to send me an email.
It’s a very nice location for a ride, 1 loop done twice, rolling terrain, passes thru an area of lovely horse farms, a very little bluestone roads, mostly grassy fields and wooded trails. Also passes thru the Brandywine Conservancy. They call it a 26 mile ride but my very accurate GPS measured it at 28 miles so you need to ride a little faster. Quite close to you.
Another fantastic CTR is the Muckleratz 25 on July 24-25. It’s a little north of Harrisburg, PA. It’s located in Weiser State Forest, hilly riding on super snowmoblie trails, nice forest graveled roads and some single track trails. Happy, happy ride, got to be one of the nicest all time rides that I’ve been to. Boots needed if your horse is barefoot. Not on the sanctioned list yet but it is happening.
Are you going to the Chesapeake? I’m taking my younger horse there next week. The goofball took a hind shoe off in the trailer yesterday. Got goofy while unloading and decided to turn around inside my slant load (I sometimes unload him this way), did it all in a rush and I just jumped out the back door to avoid being stepped on, he stepped onto a hind heel with the other hind, tripped himself, went halfway down then leaped out the back door leaving a brand new shoe behind. Now I have to get another one back on him quick.

I’ll be scribing for the lay judge again. I found a lady to ride Roxy for me–she needed a horse and the conditioning rides were tough on my hip. I like volunteering, this works well.
Was thinking about seeing if she wants to ride Roxy at the Cheshire.
I’ll be driving the horse ambulance at the Foxcatcher this year, too. Heck, I might even make it to the Old Dominion this year. I’d love for Beth to take Roxy, and I’ve been offered a horse to ride there–not sure how serious the offer was. If I can get Beth to take Roxy, I’ll either crew for her, volunteer, or ride a friend’s horse.
I’ll be at the Cheshire --scribing for the P&R folks again this year. I’d love to meet Roxy
Even if Beth doesn’t want to take Roxy there, I may come up and see the ride. One of my trimming clients is riding in it. It would be fun to meet some other COTHers.

Do you know if they’re doing a CDR too? I emailed Kim but hadn’t heard back yet. Seems to be tentative on the ECTRA calendar…
Thanks for the link. Jan did say they had a web site this year, but I couldn’t find it and lost my flyer. I don’t think she’s the ride manager this year, though.
I didn’t know they did a competitive trail ride in the laurels! how cool. But yeah, FIT horse is necessary, those hills can be killer!! but the river allows for a refreshing moment!
I train on the same trails as they have the Cheshire on and I’m looking for someone to ride with. But, I’m going to be going on training rides (10+ miles at a trot).
