Trailer Dressing Room Organizing--Using HD Magnetic Hooks Instead of Drilling?

http://www.organizedbarn.com/products.html#trailer

I’m asking Santa Claus for the trailer DR system this year BUT… I am reluctant to drill into the steel framing to hanging this thing so was considering uber heavy duty magnetic hooks… like 57 - 75 pound holding strength.

This way I can remove/move it anytime I need to or if, God forbid, I sell the trailer, want to keep it.

Anyone tried it/done that? How’d it go? Or do I just suck it up and drill away?

Thanks!

Is your trailer steel or aluminum? I had a great magnetic backed mirror that I always kept in my dressing room. It took me a minute or two of picking it up off the floor the first time I tried to put it up in my new aluminum trailer before I figured out what was going on, DUH!!!

Ah, it’s aluminum skin on Steel Framing.

Google “rivnuts”, and you will find what works the best.

Magnets will be fine if you never hit a bump.

Cool!

another five year old thread, appears to a rash of repeats these days… but often the same concerns are valid today

Magnets are great on steel trailers. I use 65lb magnets and you can put a lot of weight on them and they do not move even when loaded down while the trailer is moving.

Hubby gave me a new trailer for Christmas in 2014, Gore 2 horse with side ramp and dressing room. For the last 20 years I had a Kingston 2 horse that was in excellent shape, but I finally got my dressing room.

We designed the dressing room with the system mentioned and LOVE it! Took me three months to decide exactly what I wanted and how to set it up, but it works very well and so far two years later no problems.

Where did you find these?

At the website cited in the OP.

Meant the magnets. No worries, found some on amazon

The magnets do not hold the weight they are rated for if they are placed on a wall (rated by weight they can hold when placed overhead so pulling straight down). I use 45-50 lb rated hook in my trailer dressing room. They are OK to hold a bridle but nothing much heavier or they slide.

Also, beware of the ones sold on Amazon–the ones I bought had hooks much smaller than the measurements given. They could maybe hold a pot holder loop! I used one of those tiny bungees to make a larger loop.

Not sure why drilling/screws is a concern. I’ve worked on four horse trailers adding Rubber Maid closet shelving to the tack rooms which I’ve found to be the most versatile storage unit, readily available, and cheaper than the specific to horse trailer/barns similar systems. I am an older (ok, old) woman who rides. I have a standard cordless drill. I bought a drill bit specific for metal and the size of screws I used, and use zinc screws to avoid corrosion. It takes about an hour to install a complete 3 section “closet” unit, once you decide where you want things. Should I make a mistake (and I have) and want to move a support, I leave the screws in the holes and touch the ends with white paint so they don’t show. By inserting the shelves upside down, there is a “lip” on the edge that keeps stuff from sliding off. Further, I use bungee cords to a fasten first aid kit and brush boxes to the shelves. Oh, and my latest “discovery” is heavy duty Velcro --wrap it around broom handle, fork handle, or other tools that normally rest against a wall, place a strip on the wall of the trailer, and your tools don’t slide around or fall over! (I know that’s not what you were asking, but thought I’d throw it in.) I attached my fire extinguisher with the Velcro too, right beside the door along with the trash can.

And since I just finished my latest trailer dressing room, I do have a picture! This trailer is a bit tricky because of the curved “nose” but I made it work. I think if I were terribly clever, I could actually curve the shelves by cutting them --but not sure it would be as convenient to change them around when I show vs hunt. First photo is shelves against window/nose of trailer; second (look up) is shelving and hooks over head. FYI I put a small rug on the wall (using screws to hold it) so bridles wouldn’t bang the wall. If I were a horse, that would make me crazy!
