Trailer tire recommendations

What are we going with nowadays for the best horse trailer tire? I know that people were a fan of the Goodyear Endurance trailer tire awhile back, but I’ve also heard of them getting rather hot (need more details on that one) and not being the best for long distance hauling.

The trailer is a 2H Hawk GN. Lots of highway driving.

The Goodyear Marathon was a great tire for years but folks on trailer and tire forums swear that Marathons went bad when production was outsourced. The Endurance USA-manufactured is the tire I think Goodyear introduced to address the bad PR that Marathons were getting.

IMO many bad anecdotes about trailer tires center around folks who do two things. One is to keep on driving on five to twenty year old tires, saying that they still have plenty of tread left. Second is folks to not regularly check and adjust tire pressures at least monthly.

On my own two horse, with my tires preventively replaced every five years, I am on my second set of Kenda Karrier ST design radials. They are made in Asia, for those here concerned about overseas manufacturing and also current cost (tariff related subject). My anecdote to share is that my Kendas have never had any problems.

Speaking of tire pressure, I have these on my trailer and they have come in handy more than once. I had a rapidly leaking valve stem once and a nail in a tire a different time. I wonder what would have happened if I had kept driving with those issues, glad I didn’t have to find out!

I just replaced mine and I went with the Hankook Vantra Trailer ST01. Obviously I can’t really speak to much but I have had good luck with Hankook with my vehicles and they didn’t completely blow the budget. $630 installed. I know I definitely didn’t pay that much 5+ years ago.

Carlisles on mine, whatever else you do, avoid trailer King at all costs

I ordered the Goodyear Endurance tires. We’ll see how they do!

So if you order tires, who do you get to balance and put on the tires?

We know someone that will do it for us.

Theres is also trailer place that will do it. They remounted my old ones onto new wheels before.

I know that some shops won’t mount and balance tires if you didn’t buy the tires through them though.

FYI, the Carlisle brand is gone. The company and tire brand is now “Carlstar.”

Carlisle, a US company started in 1917, was purchased by a global investment company, Titan International, in February 2024.

I’ve put many highway miles on my Goodyear Endurance set; no problems and good ride and handling characteristics.

Well that sucks.

On the other hand, if a dealer is selling you Carlisle branded tires at least part of your “age check” is done!
