trailering cross country - ulcer treatment

Next month I am taking my horse on a dream trip to pack out in the mountains near Yellowstone and camp for 5 days. I will be trailering with friends from Georgia to Wyoming, so the horses will be on a trailer daily for 4 days, with planned stops at night and a day of rest along the way. I want to put my horse on a preventative dose of omeprazole, and am looking at ordering the Abler granules. Any advice on when to start the granules, and what doseage to use? This horse does not have a history of ulcers, but I have never trailered him more than 3 hours before. Also, any other suggestions to make the ride more successful would be great.
Thanks!
Maggie

For something like that I would definitely go with proven products rather than the Abler. I would do a full tube of Ulcergard daily or the daily Nexium protocol. I would also put them on Outlast for the whole time too.

Soak your hay and feed it wet. Reduces the dust and helps to keep the horses hydrated. I use a big bucket or rubbish bin in the trailer and keep a few nets in soaking all the time.

I want to hear about your trip!!! Would love to do this one day.

The most recent shipper I used offered the horses alfalfa soup periodically – basically soaked alfalfa pellets in a soupy gruel. Horse arrived looking better than any horse I had ever had shipped. Bright alert and not the least be tucked up from dehydration. Definitely something I will keep in mind when hauling my own horses and want to encourage them to drink. Hope you had a great time!

I want to hear about this trip, too!

One or two 20 mg esomeprazole (generic Nexium) time release capsules put in #2 empty gelatin capsules and tossed in with feed for the duration of your trip and for 2 days before and 2 days after you return. Will cost you about $14 for the esomeprazole and maybe $5-6 for a bag of empty gel caps. Cheap and convenient, and it works. Capsules are so small your horse won’t even know he’s eating them (#2 gel cap is about the size of a piece of hay pellet).
