Hi, I wonder is someone has some video of a horse trailing their hocks, trying to ‘see’ this in a prospective purchase. I am pretty sure that is what she is doing…Friesien WB x.
Also, am I right to think trailing hocks would make it more difficult to get under, so ‘pushing’ and collection would be more difficult?
Any other potential issues with trailing hocks? Thank you
Trailing hocks can be conformation. They can also be a seen on a horse that is just not moving forward. If t is the first case, it will be more difficult for her to engage than a horse that is correct in their conformation.
Stiff trailing hocks may be due to pain.
Watch the hind legs. If the cannon bone of the trailing leg is vertical when it is back BEHIND the tail, haunches are out behind. Look at the top of the loin - it should look filled, not like a bowl between saddle and croup. IMO most horses need to be taught to carry their back up and their haunches under - the naturally want to go on the forehand - especially horses with very upright necksets, like the freisians.
This depending on age an work history.
Thank you, so for sure the horse I am looking at has trailing hocks! Now to decide if they are too bad…if everything else is good.
Visualize a trapezoid, then you will see what it means to trail the hocks. If you look at a horse and see them move like a forward facing parallelogram, it is much more desireable.
