Trainer Insurance

Hi Guys,

I am new to the USA and would like to start up as a mobile instructor. I am a Bereiter FN and hold my international trainer license but would value your input on liability insurance.

Right now, I have no idea to how many different stables I would be traveling to teach so flexibility in this aspect would be greatly appreciated.

I would only take clients with their own horses and travel to their own or boarding facilities.

Thank you for your input!

Anybody?

Do a Google search on horse trainer insurance. You should get results.

As a BO, I won’t let any outside trainer teach on my property without their own insurance.

Liability insurance in the US is sold on an annual basis and you have to pay the entire premium upfront. I don’t think your stellar qualifications are going to get you any discounts; I wish they did, but anyone calling themselves a horse trainer can be insured as a horse trainer in the US.

Your insurance coverage should extend to the US and Canada, so traveling around should not be an issue. The only thing I would look for are that legal fees have no deductible and ideally, paid in addition to the liability limits. If you can’t get legal fees in excess, it’s not a huge deal. It is unlikely you will ever have a damage or settlement paid, but you may need legal representation along the way.

I’m in your area of CA, feel free to pm me if you need more info.

I insure with Equisure, they are one of the better ones and competitive on price. A lot of barns around here (if you can get into them to teach that is!) will expect to me named on your policy as this gives them greater coverage. I think most insurers will give you 2 or 3 named premises before they start to charge you extra for additional ones.

Your experience and qualifications will make little difference to the insurance price or details IME.

If you are new to the area you may be surprised at just how closed the barns are to outside trainers. Most have an on site trainer or 2 who will be extremely unwelcoming of strangers. I can also let you know of barns with terrible reputations that you may not want to align yourself with!

Thank you Oldspice. I hear you and have already made that discovery! I was also looking for a horse to ride, to test my back before I go out and obtain my own mount. Once I advised that I plan to train and what qualifications I had, the horses where no longer available.

Thankfully, I am not dependent on the income for teaching or riding so I do not mind if I will just teach the occasional clinic or only a handful of students at all.

My main objection is to be involved in the equine world again, after traveling the world so my husband can establish his IT career. Thank you for your help!!! It is much appreciated.

call EMO, they offer trainer insurance and their rates are good.

If you decided to own horses, only have one. Otherwise your “exposure level” goes up a lot and increases your premiums.

Yep, try Equisure: http://www.equisure-inc.com/products/horse-instructortrainer-insurance/

Yes, I discovered. These guys gave me a good quote: http://www.eqgroup.com/eqcgl.htm

I will only own one horse. My back does not allow for more and I do not want to turn this into “work” again. Just for fun, is the new motto.

Are any of you members of an instructor association?

I’m not. Was in the USDF Instructor Program, not anymore. Not worth it.
