Trainer recommendations (finishing a young horse) in Oregon

Hi All, my fiance and I are looking at moving from CA to Oregon this fall, after our wedding. I’ve got a 4 y/o quarter horse cross mare who is started but rough. Good head on her but she needs consistency and can have stubborn days. I’m looking for any trainer recommendations within 2 hours of Portland (so I can visit and check in on her every week or so) for 6 months of full training.

I don’t ever intend to do a lot with her. I have an English background but started her with a Western colt starter at the beginning of this year and intend to keep her mostly western - trail riding, pleasure riding, and maybe a little calf sorting for fun as she seems to have taken to it. Anyway, as I will be new to the area and am also new to the western world I’m not really sure where to begin, so any recommendations to get me started on the right track would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Have you tried attending some “calf sorting” and asking around?

I haven’t, but I currently live in CA, about 13 hours south of the Portland area. Think it may still help?

You never know, it is a small world, someone where you are may know people where you are going …

Matt Goodson in Roseburg.

Aces n eights thank you for the recommendation. I’ll look into him.

They do a lot of cow stuff, like calf penning, up in the northern Cali area. And it’s Fair season, usually all sorts of competitions going on at the more rural County Fairs. It’s a tight community, neighboring state competitors won’t be strangers to each other, buy and sell horses back and forth more likely.

I know someone in the Klamath Falls area, just moved up there from CA. She’s got extensive experience with roping, cutting, as well as trail riding and basic ranch riding. Long haul from Portland though.

Training Cupid it is, though I’ll still take the reference as I’m finding it appears most western trainers are 2.5+ hours outside of Portland, unfortunately.

Sent you a pm!
