Trainer Recommendations Near Lompoc, California

I am moving to Vandenberg in less than a month and am looking for recommendations for a dressage trainer near there. I know there are lots in the LA and Moorpark area, but that is a bit too far to go regularly. To make this harder, I will need a lesson horse as I just lost my mare. I am part leasing a horse in Goleta, but not sure if trailering out for lessons will be an option yet. I’m trying to keep the commute to an hour or less from Vandenberg. If the trainer doesn’t have a school horse I may be open to a partial lease if there are any available and in my budget.

I have shown through 3rd level, but I haven’t been in consistent lessons for the last year. I mostly just want to keep learning though, and since I am semi-horseless I don’t have a specific level I want to train for or anything like that. I mostly want to be better able to help my green lease horse learn and continue to try to be a better rider. I won’t have my own horse again for bit, but I also want to be preparing for when that happens. I likely will not have the budget for anything that isn’t green, so I want to be improving my skills for when that day comes.

Check out the CDS website California-dressage.org

You might find someone in Nipomo or Solvang.

good luck

Thanks, I checked the CDS trainer listing and there was only one trainer listed within an hour of Vandenberg that I found so I was hoping there might be more options that weren’t listed there.

Wendy Wergeles is near Lompoc, although you have to go over the Harris pass. She is an eventing trainer but she is wonderful with green horses and really knows her stuff. Sometimes has terrific horses for sale. I’d schedule a visit, and if it is not a fit, ask for some recommendations.

Nicole Chastain (now Price) has a new place in Santa Ynez, out in the vineyards. All dressage, emphasis on competition. No one seems to have school horses but everything else has changed this year, so ask. Maybe there is an am who would go for a half-lease or lesson lease.

I’m sorry about your mare.

Is SLO too far? If not, there are people in that area.

Depending on where in SLO it would be an option, particularly if it’s for a trainer with a lesson horse or a horse I could part lease at a facility with a good trainer. I love the horse I am leasing now, but not sure the trainer that just moved in to the barn he is baorded at will be a good fit for me.

Some ideas, not actually endorsements:

I’d also try Charlotte Bredahl in Solvang. Nothing ventured …

Not sure about Jackie’s lesson/lease horses, this is an option in SLO

I was gonna second Charlotte Bredahl. Was just reading I think USDF Connections and I guess she’s returned to teaching up there after her surgery. I hadn’t realized (but it makes sense) that she has essentially re-located to Florida full time. So might not be a long term option but might be a good place to start (or ask for suggestions!).

Sorry to be long absent…life got crazy. I appreciate all the suggestions!

Unfortunately socalequine.com doesn’t seem to be very up to date. Definitely planning on trying Sea Horse Ranch at some point. If I can find contact info for Charlotte Bredahl I will definitely try to reach out to her as well.

Trying not to get frustrated as my experience with barns and trainers in Moorpark was so positive, but so far my limited experience with barns and trainers in the Santa Barbara area has been really hit and miss…and mostly misses. But I’ll keep trying and see what I can figure out.
