Trainer vs Coach? Self as trainer? Amateur entry form Q's

As the title reads…

On HITS entry form, there is a spot for trainer or coach-- what is the difference, per USE(f)? I tried searching but got nothing.

As an amateur, I am allowed to show alone, or at least that is my understanding (without trainer). Is this still true?

So, for the trainer/coach spot, should I leave blank or say self or write my actual name?

TIA

The short version is that the trainer is the person who has care, custody, and control of the horse. Meaning the horse’s day to day care and any medications. The coach could be someone who has no direct involvement with the horse’s care, and just teaches or coaches the rider on the horse.

I don’t believe any of those slots on the form may be left blank. So if an amateur is showing without a trainer or coach, which is allowed under the rules, I believe the amateur would sign those blanks in that case.

Thanks MHM. Very helpful, I will list myself as trainer.

One follow up out of curiosity- does this mean a “coach” does not have to be USEF registered?

You’re very welcome. I believe a coach has to be a USEF member, or pay the non-member fee at each show.

I am an amateur and go to shows by myself fairly often, when I do I sign as the trainer for myself.

Coach can be blank if there is a trainer (or you are the trainer)

Bottom line-
If a drug test comes back positive, the “Trainer” is the person presumed to be responsible.(GR404)

Yes, if you are responsible for the day to day decisions about your horse, you should sign as trainer. (GR147)

Coach is defined as an adult who is paid to instruct, teach, school, or advise a rider at a show. (GR108)

Both Trainer and Coach must be USEF members, or pay the non-member fee. (GR1308)

Put yourself as the trainer and sign. Leave the “coach” line blank.
