Trainers around Houston

I’m a converted Event rider looking to make the big move down the Houston area. What trainers are down there that are down to earth but can also get their riders up to the FEI levels? Thanks!!

Are you looking for a dressage trainer? There are some good Eventer trainers at Twinwood Equestrian Center and the facility is AMAZING! Flint Equestrian is also good and there is only one trainer, though I have not seen the facility.

Lurena Bell was my favorite when I lived there. I tried a few others who were well-reputed but she did the most for me. She’s an accomplished FEI rider, a good instructor, and a really lovely person. I was doing 3rd to PSG when I trained with her.

There are many fine dressage trainers in Houston, it really depends on where you will live and how far you want to drive. It’s a big city. Many (but not all) barns are north to west of town. In general it’s a laid back place I don’t think you will have a problem with that!

There are many excellent trainers as well as a few not so great ones. At most facilities you of course have to use their trainer but there are a handful of barns that let you bring in outside trainers.

A lot of it will also depend on where you’ll be living unless you don’t have to work normal business hours or only ride on the weekends. Traffic can range from bearable to a total nightmare depending on where you work vs. live vs. board. There are many facilities and trainers that I might otherwise consider if they weren’t completely unfeasible due to logistics.

When I was living there, I was happy riding out of Canaan Ranch. A couple of the boarders there moved to Twinwood when Canaan sold and are quite happy there (but it’s about 1 hour west of Houston). I also agree that Lurena Bell is a really good rider/trainer (I knew her, my good friend sent her stallion to her), and she’s quite nice and can communicate well. I also recommend Nancy Hinz at Yellow Rose Dressage (about 1 hour N) - super good rider/trainer and quite down to earth. North and West of Houston seem to sport good trainers, and YES, it will depend on where you live and how far you wish to drive! Good Luck!!

I lived in Region 9 for eons. Always liked Anna Burtell.

If you’re willing to go west, consider Alison MacDonald at MacDonald Dressage. West of Katy, relaxed atmosphere that horses and riders flourish in, experience coaching pairs from intro through GP with a wide variety of breeds.
