Give me all your tips and suggestion. My gelding’s mane is thick and unruly and I’m tired of it looking so unkept. He rubs his braids out almost instantly regardless of how loose i leave them at the crest.
My horse’s very thick mane won’t stay on one side unless it is pulled very thin, even if braided over. So, thinning is key in my opinion.
With my Trolldoll mini, if I’m showing I use clippers to take down the part that won’t lie to one side.
Then put a running braid in for classes. Hair gel keeps wisps in place.
Of course, it grows back funky, but we go from this:
To this:
My horse has a curly in his pedigree --his forelock and tail are curly --but his mane is a mess unless I let it grow really long —so I roach. It keeps him tidy for the hunt field and the archery courses –
My TWH has a lovely mane. Nearly to his shoulder when I got him
But he grazes through my fenceline - coated tensile wire - & gives himself the Equine Combover: big patches of bald
So he gets roached too.
Before:
After:
This year I tried cutting his mane to a bit longer than braiding length.
But he’s still managed to thin a patch, so he’ll likely get roached again
Okay. but he is adorable!
I might honestly just suck it up and roach him. He has quite the pencil neck and I feel he’ll look absolutely ridiculous, but it might but the best thing to start over and train from there.
Thanks guys!
My gelding grows a long , thick mane. After many years of my mane-less appaloosa I thought I would love it but I find it gets tangled in my reins, gets messy and in the way of other things so I pull it short
He looks so much better, is cooler and we are both happy.
