Isselhook’s First Sight TSF just finished a nice round at the 5K National Hunter Derby:

Oh, WOW, that canter!!!
I could SO see that one eating up a cross-country course!
I believe he was eventing with Alex Green when he was originally imported. Not sure when he went to Doug.
Jessica Phoenix events many Trakehners from Galton Farms in Ontario. One is going to the Olympics currently.
I think he’s evented through prelim or intermediate. He was one of the ones I saw in my cursory search of the FEI database for active traks.
Yes! He was a very nice eventer. I’ve been watching his journey even though I don’t have a breedable mare.
BTW, if you got a tag for an unrelated thread; I went to reply to you here, and it showed up there. Sorry!
This reads a lot more like arab to me than tb (also the jumping style you describe). Not to denigrate them or anything. I love both arabs and tbs but went from arabs to a motley assortment of wbs (no traks afaik) to a motley assortment of tbs, and the tbs just feel like “home”
I have always been curious about traks because they are compare to ths, but am afraid to try them because the most detailed descriptions of their sensitivity sound subtly more like arab than tb.
It really depends on the bloodlines. My friend has a Trakehner who is the hottest horse she’s ever ridden. I had an old-style Trakehner descended directly from the original Prussian stud, and he was a completely different type.
Hers: Hot, light, leggy, slim, loses weight easily
Mine: Quiet, heavy bodied with short legs, very wide body, air fern
When I was a young rider I worked for a few breeders. By FAR my favorite were the Trakehners. Absolutely phenomenal horses and a joy to ride. Very forward, movers and confident jumpers. Trustworthy horses. Kind of a perfect horse imho. Very hard to find nice ones in the USA.
Are there bloodlines you can recommend?
Consul was maybe my favorite. These days? I mean Grafenstolz if I could! Sixtus to jump. Millennium, Morricone is a strong sire line. Heling is a lovely sire. Abdullah threw a lot of good broodmares. Most of the A-named stallions throw excellent mares.
I would also look into the Spanish Anglo-Arab studbook right now tbh.
we have at our barn a German osteopath who flies in to adjust the horses several times a year. When he saw my trakehner he laughed and said he looked like a draft horse compared to how they were currently being bred in Germany, ie, light without a lot of bone.
Sounds like my guy. He was massive - his head was the length of my entire torso. For reference, I’m 5’ 9”.
Thanks for the photo. I would be hard put to visualize his head being as long as your torso without it.
What did you do with him? Jump? Event? Dressage?
Dressage. He had been on the Oregon YR team when I got him and was completely bombproof, which was perfect for getting my confidence back after my TB event horse who bucked off everyone who ever sat on him.
His only flaw was that he didn’t go forward. We found out after he was retired that he had contracted shipping fever on his way to the YR Championships in NJ one year and it had permanently scarred his lungs, so he physically couldn’t breath well enough to go forward.
He was a fat & happy retired guy until he foundered after colic surgery at age 28.
Here’s a 20 yr old photo of my Trak gelding. He was 11y in the pic. I started him myself and he was so forgiving. He was out of a heavy black old style mare and sire was Abdullah. We did a little bit of everything, but mostly dressage. As I mentioned further upthread, I’d get another!
Trakehners are well presented at the Olympics this year. Gribaldi is overrepresented; Totilas has five offspring competing, Easy Game has two offspring competing. Not bad for a small book. From the ATA:
The 2024 Paris Olympics are right around the corner! There are several Trakehners and part-Trakehners competing in this year’s equestrian events.

I’m also on the 'wouldn’t touch with a 10 ft pole" side of things. I spent two summers breaking in solely Trakheners (purpose bred for high level eventing and h/j). They’re very fancy and capable but if I’m being blunt, they’re why warmbloods are labelled “dumbbloods”. Either lazy, or sensitive to the point of being dangerous.
BUT here’s my bias -
A) I’m team thoroughbred all the way and generally prefer them over warmbloods in general
B) I totally agree that all horses are good in their own way and there have been Traks that I have adored, but after breaking in over 100 of them, if I had the choice I wouldn’t buy one.
They either don’t give a shit about anything and put themselves in stupid situations, OR think way too much and put themselves in stupid, dangerous situations.
You’re welcome to DM if you have any questions. If you want one I know a great breeding farm for them!
What farm did you work for that you broke and started that many? I had no idea such a big string existed in the States, so I’m genuinely curious.
I would imagine Valhalla had that many.
