Trauma void helmets

For those who own them or have tried them on, what’s the shape difference between the lynx with the dial fit and the other one? Also is the microfiber more like the outer texture of a gpa/IRH?

I’ve always really liked my older gpa and IRH. Older Charles owen look ridiculous on me. I’m getting back into more lessening so haven’t tried on a newer Charles owen and haven’t bought a helmet in 7 years. Looking to maybe try a trauma void with the discounts today.

I just bought a Lynx with the dial fit. It was closer fitting, sat down farther on my head if you will. The dial fit will allow me to wear my hair down or up (very short pony just tucked up to hold ends) very easily. I tried on every brand of upscale helmet and the Lynx was by far the best fit for my tiny, kid sized head. It’s a smooth matte finish and looks sharp. I haven’t ridden in it yet, but will today. I hope my trainer is thrilled by it!

I have the CO AYR8 which fits and have the Lynx if that helps at all. The EQ3 sat on top of my head vs around it which wasn’t an option and seems to be the biggest complaint with those. If you have a round vs oval head it might work. I’ve had the Lynx about a month and like it.

LetItBe

I just ordered the Lynx, excited to try it when it gets here. But I’ve heard that the Lynx is better for oval shaped and EQ3 for round, though Trauma Void says both are shaped for round heads. I usually wear Tipperary and Ovation, was torn between the Lynx and a OneK and decided to try the MIPS. Sadly I can’t tell you yet if it actually does fit my oval head, but I think that’s the general helmet shape (Lynx = oval, EQ3 = round).

I can’t comment much about the shape of the heads for the Trauma Void helmets.

What I can comment on is how amazing I feel after having a concussion/accident last Thursday while wearing my Eq3 with the MIPS technology.

First off, I was not mounted. I was not holding my horse. I was standing at the in gate at Devon. Watching the round in the ring as we tried to figure out how long until my class would start. Mercifully I was wearing my helmet but it was unbuckled.

What happened next sounds a bit crazy but it’s true. The horse in the ring dropped it’s rider. The bridle came off in the process and became entangled in the horse’s hind legs. That caused the horse to panic…so he was galloping around the ring as he headed back towards the gate. He never slowed down. He jumped the gate (Like a steeplechaser) and hit me in the process. The helmet has a distinct mark where it took that impact before falling (with me) to the ground.

I was injured with a gash on my brow that was bleeding excessively (as all good head wounds do). I was hospitalized and received stitches and a CT scan to check for any signs of bleeding on my brain. There were none.

I have had a number of concussions in my 48 years and I can tell you without hesitation that this is the first one that I have felt back to normal within 24 hours. I haven’t had any of the typical side effects and I am able to cognitively process all the normal thoughts, actions etc since the accident last Thursday. I go in today to be cleared (or at least start the discussion to be cleared) to return to work, riding and driving a car.

I am sold on the MIPS technology. I will not own a helmet without it now. And I likely will start wearing my helmet around the shows a bit more. This was a total accident but one that me having the right tool on my head helped prevent a world of other problems and worse outcomes.

There are only three companies making ASTM approved MIPS helmets right now. Trauma Void, Charles Owen and Armis Polo helmets. To be very clear, Charles Owen only has 3 MIPS models including 1 skull cap. Every single Trauma Void has it.

To state clearly the following brands DO NOT have MIPS technology in any of their current helmets:

Samshield
GPA
One K
Ovation
Tipperary
Troxel
IRH

You all can make your own choices but this accident and last 6 days have been a water shed moment for me as I felt what did and didn’t happen to me after this accident. That horse didn’t slow to a nice hunter canter and pop the gate and land and nudge me to the side. It all out ran me down. My husband thought I was going to die in front of him. It was that serious of a thing. I promise that I will forever thank my instincts to buy MIPS helmets as soon as they were released given how important coming home is to me. I own 4 Trauma Voids and by the end of next week will probably be up to 6. (I like all the colors and styles.)

Thanks for reading my thoughts as you all read about real stories on the internet.

When I last fell off a horse I had recently bought an EQ3 MIPS helmet. I am really glad I was wearing it.

Not so much for the concussion aspect (deep sand, I did not land on my head, and I fell off at walking speed–a little buck and twist from the horse) but because my neck, which for the past 35 years has always been ready, willing and able to clench up and not let go for days, pain, pain, pain.

My neck did not bother me AT ALL after my fall, the next day, and for several days thereafter.

I am sold on the MIPS technology. As far as I am concerned these helmets are worth every penny I spend on them.

The EQ3 fits my head, which is the GPA shape. Charles Owens don’t seem to work for me. I have fallen off more in the last month than in 10 years–never even thought about a headache after. I will not ride in anything that does not have this technology.

Wow! I saw one of your other posts about it getting busted up. What an incident.

What is the microfiber like? Does everything stick to it?

I have the Lynx and I love it. It’s the most comfortable helmet I’ve ever owned and it also seems to be one of the better ventilated ones. I upgraded after my OneK took a beating in a nasty fall in the spring and wish I had done it sooner!

I love my Lynx. I can also wear Uvex, One K, Tipperary, and Charles Owen. I cannot wear GPA, Samshield, or the EQ3.

Not that I’ve ever really noticed but my helmets stay hanging on a hook in my tack room. I bed on straw so not really anything that sticky around the helmets.

I bought a Trauma Void helmet in the spring, and can’t make myself wear it because I can see the harness out of the corner of my eye and it rubs my cheek as well-drives me nuts. The harness is just too far forward, toward my face. The helmet itself is very comfortable, but I fiddle with the harness the whole time I’m wearing it.

After reading Xctrygirl’s account, I may cowboy up and wear it anyhow.

Maybe go try the Lynx model. It’s just enough different that it may feel better. I love both and sure I am biased but the lynx is a pretty cool helmet.

Fwiw I had to play with my harness a bit on my first Trauma Void to get it to sit in a comfy place.

I rode in my Lynx and LOVE IT. Seriously, so comfortable and good looking. After reading Xctrygirl’s account, I am even happier with my choice. I hope more helmet companies begin to embrace this technology.

The prices are really good on these helmets!

That’s why I own 4. I have 2 blues, 1 brown and 1 black. All for the price of 1 Samshield. (Who have said they will not be incorporating MIPS)
