Treating Coccidia in barn cats

I’ve been working with my vet on treating 9 barn cats for coccidia…we are now at day 10 of giving Albon and there hasn’t been much if any improvement with the diarrhea. I just added compounded liquid metronidazole yesterday …they all HATE the taste of this …immediately gagging and drooling :weary: I’ve also been giving all of them probiotics (Bene Bac gel) . Anyhow - a guy that I’ve worked with through the cat TNR program told me he treats his cats with Toltrazuril 5% liquid suspension and sees improvement sometimes in 24 hrs …I mentioned this to my vet and she said that it will kill the cats if I give it to them :flushed: …the guy who runs this program said he hasn’t had one die yet :woman_shrugging:t2:. He orders his through HorsePreRace online …I’ve also seen similar product on Amazon …Toltramax and Toltrazurilshop online as well. There is also something online from University of Wisconsin called Shelter Medicine and they recommend treating with Toltrazuril or Ponazuril over Albon and SMZ. Has anyone treated their barn cats with these drugs from any of these online shops ?? Of course I’m scared to give it but at the same time I can’t keep spending $$ hundreds of dollars on meds from the vet that aren’t effective either and I’m sooo over dealing with this nasty diarrhea …and my cats are getting to the point of not wanting to cooperate easily after 10 days of meds …and now adding Metronidazole that tastes awful is challenging.

I’ve only had vets rx that liquid metronidazole a couple times and I straight up refuse it now. It feels like torture to use it. If you can pill them, that’s MUCH BETTER if they have to be on it.

Ponazuril and toltrazuril have been studied.

I’d ask the vet about compounded ponazuril (we use it in horses for epm, the brand name is Marquis) and see if she’s more willing to do that. The compound is cheap but you’ll need a script. I get it from farm vet (for my horses.)

Don’t be afraid to push back on the metronidazole. It’s awful.

I’m actually the one who requested liquid -figuring it will be flavored and should be tolerable …boy was I wrong …I’ve given the pills before and they also taste horrible and will cause them to drool etc …in my experience it’s never been easy to pill a cat …and they’re not likely going to take it in a pill pouch like a dog would …,also this is being done times 9 cats :weary: dear god help me …I’m going to send these studies to the vet …,maybe she will feel more comfortable if a compounding company formulates it rather than buying it online :woman_shrugging:t2:?

If you wrap pills in just a little scrap of pill pocket, just enough to cover, and pill then with that, that covers the taste and makes them slide down much easier. Highly recommend, not just for metronidazole, but for anything.

But I totally agree that piling an entire herd of barn cats sound like something to avoid :sob:

I hope you’re able to get some traction with your vet on different meds!

That’s a good idea and definitely worth trying if this doesn’t work out.

I was taught that Albon is more coccidiostatic than true ‘cure’. I would ask for ponazuril, it’s a shorter course of treatment and more likely to fully eliminate the infection.
