Treating diarrhea in 5-6 week old kitten

I have a kitten who has camphylobacter with liquid diarrhea. We finally got him started on erthromycin yesterday afternoon. He is receiving copious amounts of probiotics. I am putting Desatin on his red bum. My vet was hesitant to put him on anything to control the diarrhea but he leaks almost continuously. I would think that after 2 days of e-mycin, it would be ok to slow it down at least a bit! Any suggestions. I have towels down everywhere so he can run and play .

OP, I agree with you: It should have started to clear up by now.

It sounds like he still feels good. If he gets too quiet or his skin starts feeling like “thin, old lady hand skin,” or like dry, fall leaves (in living skin form… hard to explain), it means he’s getting dehydrated. It’s not hard to give sub-cutaneous fluids to a cat, even a kitten.

Keep yer eyes peeled. And best wishes for kitteh.

I read on a cat site 1/8 teaspoon of Metamucil will help firm up stools. What do you think?

Metamucil is a laxative. It will not firm up anything.

Endosorb is perfect for this, does your vet have it?

I have given BioSponge to my dog, it is cat safe.

Probiotic? Greek Yogurt?

Could he have a food intolerence to what he is eating on top of the camphylobacter?

Wash your hands!!!

Jingles for you both.

He is only on KMR (kitten milk replacement). Metamucil is good for both ends of the GI spectrum, diarrhea and constipation. He was leaking this morning but none all this afternoon despite still having loose stools. No leaking is an improvement! He is rambunctious and drinks his KMR with gusto so we are staying ahead.

I maybe wouldn’t add new food at this moment, but when I had a wee kitten once they were past bottle feeding they started on KMR mixed with canned food. Maybe you could try a teeny little bit? May give his stool a bit more bulk having more than just KMR.

KMR ingredients : Water, Condensed skimmed milk, Milk protein consentrate, Soybean oil, Cream, Egg yolks, (and various vit. minerals, etc)

If he is sensitive to cow’s milk, lactose, Soy, or Eggs, This food could be an issue. It is a question for the vet if he continues with loose stool.

But, it is great news that the leaking has stopped, hopefully he is turning the corner.

You are wonderful to help this little guy!!!

P.S. Purina makes Fortiflora for felines, here it is available at Petsmart/Petco.

It can be mixed with his formula or a little greek yogurt.

How is your wee kitten today?

I work 24 hours so dad has the duty. I got up early, cleaned his butt for hopefully one of the last times and took him in the bathroom so he could bounce around while I got dressed. He raced around and I was almost late from having to get him out of the shower and out of the clothes hamper in a repeating circle! He is getting probiotics. I just can’t really find out how long until the e-mycin kicks in and stops the diarrhea (because it killed the campylobacter and resulting toxin). I guess it’s only been 48 hours but it’s been a long week! Vet wanted to hold off on antidiarrheals if he is feeling well and he is a little race car so watching him carefully for slowing down. Dehydration is always a concern but he is drinking a lot of KMR. KMR is kinda the standard for this age and my vet did say he had the largest amount of campylobacter on a slide she’s ever seen so maybe I’m impatient.

I’ve had really good luck with metronidazole suspension. I know it’s a strong drug but I’ve given it to young kittens to treat (and prevent) diarrhea and have had no problems. I want to say the suspension is 50mg/ml and I give 1/10 ml per pound once a day for 5-7 days (twice a day for severe cases). They hate it but it works!

He has been on the e-mycin a week today and we have been diarrhea free for 3 days. He is racing around like a tasmanian devil! And growing. We are trying to introduce canned (Wellness chicken).

Happy Dancing for you both!!!
