Treating early white line issues

Tell me what has worked best for you…product and frequency of use…to treat and prevent white line issues.

  1. Stay on top of the trim.

  2. Figure out cause. Is this bacterial, or mechanical separation from flared walls? Send us some photos.

  3. When my mare developed mechanical separation we only solved it by the vet (who is a trained farrier too) resecting all the loose outer wall so that the new wall could grow out right. Maresy is barefoot which was both the cause of the problem, but also allowed the solution. Might be hard to resect to that degree and hold a shoe.

  4. White lightning might help if you have bacterial/fungal infection on a perfectly trimmed foot, but not if there is a mechanical component

  5. Any flare or long toes is a potential mechanical component

What is the nutrition on this horse? You’ve got to make sure you are feeding enough zinc and copper. What all are you feeding?

If my horse develops a crack that isn’t completely eliminated by a trim we (my farrier and I) have determined that it’s best to just go ahead and resect out that bit of hoof, even if there’s no noticeable infection. Otherwise, the crack never completely goes away. I also give it a good soak with Clean Trax right after the trim, and then apply B-Gone White Line about once a week until the resected hoof is grown out (usually one or two trims).

Like others have said, keeping up with the trim is key.

Paddockwood, she gets excellent grass/alfalfa mix hay, pasture, and Enrich Plus Senior ration balancer.

Spray the nail holes with hydrogen peroxide.

She’s barefoot.
