How do you treat ringworm during the winter when the horse needs to wear a blanket all the time and does not have an extra blanket to switch to? I have read many of the forums on how to treat but don’t see anything about blanketing at the same time. Please HELP!!!
You’ll need to find an extra blanket so you can clean one while the other is in use and keep them rotated. It’s a fungus, it’s happy to live just about anywhere so it can come back and attack again at a later date. So it’s either keep a clean blanket on hand to put on after or keep your horse stabled so it doesn’t need to wear a blanket during treatment.
I use Virkon. It’s a totally off label use, but I’ve used it on both horses and cattle and it is by far the easiest, least annoying for both animal and human, and quickest method of killing it off. I mix it up so it’s the pink version of strong tea and put it in a spray bottle. For faces I dab it on carefully with paper towel or cotton wool. Frequency I’ve used is once/day until I can see it has stopped spreading which is usually only a few days.
