Treeless and girth?

Am having to go treeless due to ongoing issues with my hips (I max out at about 20 mins in a treed saddle).

I got a sensation hybrid - but am having some issues w/ rolling (altho I am still waiting on my skito - but it rolled w/ the demo, too).

I’m currently using a short mohair endurance style girth.

Anybody got other ideas? Anybody tried anything like the tixerant thing?

I have a Haf pad, and my saddle doesn’t roll at all with my regular girth. (It’s fleece lined.) I tried a different girth, and there was as tiny bit of slippage. The better one is a lot wider, but I’m not sure if that’s the difference.

My son uses a Smartcinch on his western Black Forest, and his doesn’t slip either. He also has a Haf pad.

Hmmm… Where is your horse’s girth groove? If it’s forward, and he/she has no withers, you might look at one of the anatomical girths like the County logic.

Also take a look at the Professional’s Choice dressage girths - they’re pretty tacky. http://profchoice.com/i-7261630-ventech-dressage-girth.html

One more thought - are you using a breastplate? The endurance style ones can make a big difference…

I have a breast plate on - but not tight as I don’t want to squoosh her.

And we def. have the round, so-so wither, forward girth groove thing going.

She’s also got really loose elbows - she had really bad galls on both sides when I bought her.

Does anybody know if equiprene is sticky? This is about the only no-mohair, not-leather large center girth I’ve seen…

I use a thinline girth - no slippage. During the winter I have to switch to my prof choice fleece one since my gelding acts like he’s dying when his hair gets pulled! I have no prob with the prof choice during the winter, just like my thinline better in general:)

Paintedtrails - are you using one of the thinlines w/ elastic or w/o elastic?

I have a Sensation Hybrid and I use this girth: http://www.equinenow.com/store-item-4455. It is the really soft neoprene with a smooth texture. If I use anything else my horses get galled. I do not have slipping issues…If your saddle is brand new you will need to snug it down a little tighter than normal while it breaks in, it will loosen up while you ride in it.

Saddle IS brand new - but the husband accidentally cranked the girth TOO tight and it still slipped. Having said that - so did my demo.

Hmm, I have a Sensation G4 Jump that I use an equalizer girth on. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DRESSAGE-EQUALIZER-HUMANE-COMFORT-GIRTH-NO-SLIP-20-32-/230458481378?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35a8655ae2

Is your saddle rolling only while you mount, or while you ride?

I always mount with a block, and my saddle has never rolled for me. That said, I had a friend who wanted to try my Sensation, so I let her ride my horse for a bit and I’ll be damned that saddle was shifting all over the place!

So…could it be that you are using the saddle to balance? Maybe weighting one stirrup more than the other, encouraging it to shift?

Just an idea…it happened to my friend (who admittedly weights one stirrup more than the other on a habitual basis).

I have a black forest aspen. I use a humane end dressage girth and I have a Dixie Midnight pad underneath which I think helps keep stuff from slipping too. I do mount from a block usually, but I have not had any slipping at all and I generally keep my girth on the looser side of tight

Fix your balace issues and it shouldn’t be a problem.

I always mount from a block, log, etc…I physically can’t mount from the ground w/o a lot of pain.

Part of the issue is most definitely a crooked pelvis - right now I’m trying to shim the seat to see if it helps. More sitting crooked than weighting the stirrup…

In the arena the shifting doesn’t really bother me because there is always plenty of room/time to recover.

I’m more concerned about eventual trail riding and having something ‘goofy’ happen that throws me off balance where it’s more difficult to recover.

Daajte - does that humane end girth have any elastic in the middle? That is WAY howdy cheaper than others I’ve looked at!

That is the same “Humane Equalizer” girth that I use on both of my horses. Yes, they are a very good buy. One coll thing isa that you can adjust them so that the front buckle is higher than the back buckle, keeping the buckle up above the elbow area. .

Another suggestion, DO use a properly adjusted breastplate to keep you saddle from turning badly in case of a fall or near fall. I agree that you don’t want to restrict your horse or make them uncomfortable with a breastplate. Use the “english” style, maybe with padded shoulders. Adjust the shoulder straps way out and shorten the breast to girth strap. This will place the ring at the center of the breast “Y” down low. This allows the horse to lower it’s neck and head to drink and graze comfortably while keeping the breastplate tight enough to help stabilize the saddle in case the rider has a very sudden weight shift. I had a Sensation roll under a horses belly during a bad spook, obviously I dropped off and the horse ran for a couple of miles with the saddle underneath it. I hadn’t used a breastplate that one time on a green horse. Live and learn!

What pad are you using? I use a Dixie Midnight under a Close Contact Skito. I also use a Zilco type padded breast collar. I’ve never had slipping issues (except for that time I used showsheen on the saddle area). Maybe it has more to do with your horse’s conformation.

I’m waiting on a skito made for her/me. Right now the one I’m using is def. too much padding for my weight - which may be part of the issue.

The demo tho, was also a skito.

Both the skito’s were 100% fleece on the bottom - not the ones that are half felt.

ETA: Reading on another board - you may be correct that part of the issue is her conformation. Slab sided, flat back, not a lot of wither.

Once I get the correct Skito I’m going to try that w/ my all elastic girth and see if it helps.

There is no visible elastic on this girth. It looks and feels similar to the Wintec girths, with the waffle weave antibacterial material against the horse. There may be some give, but not as much as if the buckle ends had elastic on them.

This girth I purchased new on ebay (the link in my previous post) and it’s been great! One year of hard use and still washes up like new. I use it for both my Sensation and my Ansur Carlton.

I can honestly highly recommend it against it’s more expensive counterparts and the best part is, you just dunk to clean!

Just saw this:)
I have one with elastic, like this:

Yes, they are $$…I manage to find one used through the treeless saddles yahoo group!

I use a Toklat Woolback with my Barefoot saddle. I used to use one of the montana cinchas, but Tommy’s less girthy in the woolback.
