Treeless Ansur Saddle/Dressage Naturally Program

Over the years, I have ridden in three Ansur models. I first tried the Ansur about 15 years ago. The saddle constantly spun around the barrel of my little Morgan mare and she detested the use of any type of anti-slip pad. Sold that one. In 2012 or so, I tried and bought an Ansur Excel. I now had three horses and, at first, it seemed to work well for horses and me. However, the more I rode in it, I had trouble finding my balance. Finally, after seeing a video of one of my lessons, I realized that the stirrup bar position was putting me in a major chair position, which explained why my balance was so off. Both the Classic and the Excel were bought new and resold for about 70% of the original value on Ebay.

Last year, I tried and purchased a Carlton dressage from Pelham Saddlery. The saddle came with a gullet filler (makes it fit like the Classic), gullet panels and shoulder columns. The saddle is a fantastic fit on my Morgan x TB/Clyde cross gelding. He is comfy and I am balanced. The saddle does not fit my Morgan mare very well. She is very uphill and the saddle puts me in a chair position. I suppose I could get fancy with padding but in my opinion, if you have to get creative with padding, the saddle is not the right fit.

For what it is worth, I use a regular PRI saddle pad with the Carlton. The saddle does not slip and the gelding is happy.

10 years ago a friend of mine has an Ansur for her Perch/Walker cross she did dressage with. He had such a wide, strange back it was the only thing he was comfortable in. It was quite a nice saddle. She did get it used.

I am thinking about an Ansur Classic for my wide bodied QH mare. I have ridden in a Heather Moffett in the past and had some issues with the stirrup “strap” placement over the wither of my Arab but he has a more TB with than most. This girl is a former rescue and now that she has filled out she is a tank but does have a bit of a wither. How do you keep this saddle from rolling on a round, flat backed horse without over tightening the girth? I have a David Ahn cork filled pad left over from my Moffett that I was wondering about. This model is a 2008, they are asking $650, does that sound reasonable? Thanks!

Hi Catherine! Just saw your post. I think the construction of the Classic does not work well for flat-backed round horses. The Carlton model actually has panels that form a nice channel for the spine and keep the saddle balanced on those flat backs. I saw 2 Carltons on the Pelham Saddlery website as well a Chic and Classic models. They offer a great trial program. I would encourage you to try before you buy! Keep me posted! KarenRO
