Tresaderm Ear Drops Side Effect - Deafness? Help please!

My dog was at the vet last week - was Rx’d Tresaderm.

14 y.o. Border Collie mix.

Background:
Dry skin, repeated skin infections. Occasional ear infection. Cold intolerant.
I asked if they could check her thyroid. Sure enough - low.

She had her ears cultured and cleaned.

Rx’d:
Simplicef (has taken before no problems) (finished the Rx’d course).
Soloxine (new drug for her)
Chlorpheniramine Maleate (change from Hydroxyzine)
Tresaderm Drops - 2x/day (perhaps she has been on these drops before)

I noticed her being “out of sorts” within a few days.
I thought it was her body adjusting to the Soloxine.
Or may the Chlorph. was making her drowsy.
I noticed her hearing was not as keen - attributed that to the drops in her ears - like a person under water cannot hear as well.

We finished the Simplicef. I stopped the Soloxine. Gave less of the Chlorph.

Now she is back to “normal” - except she is totally deaf! WTH!?

I just realized she cannnot hear anything. Damn it. Furiously researched all the drugs - and it appears the Tresaderm is the culprit.

I highly doubt one or both of her eardrums were/are ruptured.

The Neomycin in the Tresaderm is an Aminoglycoside that is ototoxic?

I don’t understand what would cause the deafness.

Is it temporary or permanent? Anything I can do? (on a weekend of course).

I was given the bottle - not a box with info - Rx says use for 14 days.
I stopped at day nine. Some days did not do both doses.

I am devastated. Ears drops causing deafness???!!!

I know she could hear before starting these meds.

Help please.

Usually it is Mometamax and Baytril optic which are associated with a risk of deafness

“The most common cause of ototoxicity is the group of drugs known as the aminoglycoside antibiotics, which includes gentamicin, kanamycin, neomycin, tobramycin, and others. At times these drugs are the only treatment for a life-threatening infection, but they must be used with caution. Concurrent conditions, such as an on-going infection or topical steroids, may increase penetration of a topical agent into the inner ear, increasing its toxicity. Recovery after hearing loss does not occur.”

tresaderm has neomycin AND a topical steroid in it, plus on-going infection= triple whammy. Vet should have been aware of this risk?

My old aussie seemed to lose her hearing after some ear drops. She recovered her hearing after many months. Don’t have a record of what drops. Also she was most likely positive for the MDR1 herding breed gene mutation.
