Tri-Hist Replacement?

What does everyone use these days now that you cannot get Tri-Hist? My gelding has respiratory issues (IAD) but had been doing great just being on Smartbreathe…hasn’t been on an antihistamine since they stopped making Tri-Hist a couple years ago. All has been well until last week…now he is coughing and has a snotty nose. He is on antibiotics in case it is an upper respiratory infection but I would really like an antihistamine for him. I tried googling but really nothing comes up. Is there a human drug you can use?

I have a friend that gives her horse generic Zyrtec. 14 pills a days crushed keeps her guy from coughing all the time.

Thanks Squirt…about how big is your friends horse? My guy is probably 1200 lbs. Dutch Warmblood.

I also use generic Zyrtec. Per my vet’s instructions, I give 40 10mg tabs per day, split over three meals. She eats the tabs just fine without the need to crush (they are small).

You can still get prescription pyrilamine maleate, which is the antihistamine found in Trihist. It just doesn’t have the pseudoephedrine HCL (decongestant) that was in Trihist. There is also pyrilamine with expectorant (Guaifenesin) available with prescription. The prescription Trihist with the pseudoephedrine was available just recently through my vet, but is now on backorder nationally. I actually just called Neogen to ask when they may be back in production and they said they couldn’t get the “raw product” aka psuedoephedrine to make trihist at this time and did not know when they would. Thank you meth-heads! May also be related to the cold/flu season coming up and increased need for human decongestant meds - we can hope.

You can also get the Cetirizine (zyrtec) prescription strength for horses. Likely less expensive and easier to administer then the human OTC product.

I think HistAll has replaced TriHist.
