I have a 4yr old gelding and 20yr gelding and have been looking at Tribute Kalm N Ez Gc Plus to switch to from Purina Active Senior. I don’t have any local retailers so I’d have to order - Big Dee’s seems to be the cheapest. Is it worth switching? I also give them Acti-Flex by Cox and it would save me a ton of money switching to Tribute with the joint supplement compared to adding it to Purina. The horses are used for trail riding purposes. Anywhere from 10-50 miles per week.
How many pounds of Purina Sr Active are you feeding? The KNE CP is listed at 1470 cal/lb, Purina Sr Active is around 1600, so you might not be saving much, if any, if you have to feed more pounds
Glucosamine and MSM are generally recommended to feed at 10,000mg/day to the average horse, which means 8lb of the KNE CP. Chondroitin is generally recommended at 5000, though some say 2500 is good enough, and 8lb is 3530mg
The rest is up to you - those are just the numbers to use to try to help make the decision
I started feeding this a couple months ago, I order it delivered with Chewy. I appear to have moved into a black-hole of quality horse products here in middle Georgia, and having it delivered by Chewy is the same price as like all of the horse feeds available in-person at a local store. And I had issues with picking up feed locally.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Tribute feeds, and Kalm N EZ specifically. I started feeding Kalm N EZ (regular) like 10-12 years ago in Ohio for my mare that came off the track with recurent ulcers. No corn, no molasses, low NSC = ideal. It’s like $10/bag more expensive down here, but again, it’s the same price point everything else is here, even the locally milled feeds. The GC+ is basically the same price as the regular on Chewy, so I figured I might as well get a “free” joint supplement with it. I’m not a big believer in oral joint supplements; there’s not a lot of evidence indicating they do anything. But anecdotally, my teenage mare (with a history of stifle concerns - yay sporthorses) moved to Georgia with her stifles a bit ouchy. She’s barely been ridden the past three years. A couple weeks after changing to Kalm N EZ GC+ she was all better and we’re holding off on injections. Whether it’s the GC+, the conditioning, or the improved feets (less wet here than Florida), or all three that has her stifles feeling better is anyone’s guess.
