Trifexis Side Effects??

My supply of Interceptor finally ran out and since my dog vomited on Heartguard, my vet recommended Trifexis for him. He had his first dose last month, and I didn’t notice any side effects but my husband later reported that the pup had experienced some diarrhea, but it could also have been attributed to an abundance of treats from some customers.

Yesterday, he got his second dose. A little bit of the pill in the AM, which he rejected and then the balance of the pill hidden in his lunch. By about 8:30, he came out of his crate for dinner a little oddly, and then I had to really rouse him at 10:00 PM for his last pee. I also noticed him uncomfortable behind. This AM, again, reluctant to get up to go outside, seemed stiff and then moving normally. But after his initial walkabout, he had no interest in going for our pre-work walk. He ate breakfast, and I’ve had no distressing reports from my husband. He’s definitely not himself though. I did read about lethargy as a side effect from Trifexis. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Or any other reactions?

I’ve used it for 6 months now for 3 corgis and 2 pug mixes with no negative reactions that I’m aware of. My vet said to use this product when Interceptor became unavailable. I hope your boy is feeling better.

I feed it with food or else my guys vomit. Other than that they are fine with it. I wrap it in cheese pry open their jaws and shove it down. I usually do it at night so they can sleep on it and not throw it up. No lethargy to report on my end.

The only problems I have had/seen is the vomiting.

search for my post…I will try to find it in a bit…I remark that my dog has side effects using this product. I called the company and talked to them about the side effects. Riley is part of the 1% that have issues with it. They fully refunded my box.

He has neurological side effects.

My older dachshund had issues with it–lethargy, loss of appetite (that’s a big deal for her, she’s a stomach with short legs), and I think she might have vomited too. However, the vet accidentally gave us the wrong dosage–so she got the 20-40 lb dose, and she was 16 lbs at the time. I don’t know if the slight overdose was the problem or the drug itself, but she’s on Iverhart now instead. I still use the Trifexis (correct dose) with my other dachshund and he’s been fine.

He’s back to his normal self thankfully. But I am definitely concerned with dosing him again next month. Thanks for your replies. I think a call to my vet is in order and we’ll have to see what our other options are.

All three of my dogs use Trifexis… mainly because I think it is the easiest. I’ve used it for 4 years on my oldest and never had issue. Hopefully you can figure out what works for your dog!

My dogs seem to spend the first day of their heartworm pill (no matter what kind) a little groggy and lethargic. Same on Interceptor or the new pill (don’t remember what it is-not Trifexis, though.) No idea why, but they just always seem a bit sluggish and sleepy, then are normal the next day.

This is pretty much what I do, except I crumble the pill up on top of the food instead of shoving it down. I use it for my daughter’s mini dachshund, he’s horribly allergic to fleas. We’ve never had a problem.

Haven’t had any issues with any of my dogs, except that they really do NOT like the taste of the Trifexis, and my crew are terrifically un-picky. One of my girls won’t take it at all unless it’s covered with a pill pocket or something, one nibbled at it, but then spit it out, my big guy chewed it a lot longer than is normal for him, and I don’t think the third girl even tasted it, she gulped it so fast!

I can’t blame them, because I think it smells horrible.

Happily, though, this was our last month on Trifexis, because Sentinel (same thing as Interceptor, but with the flea product added) is back! I’ve got an order in with Foster&Smith as I type. Definitely looking forward to going back to the good old stuff again!
