Trimax vs. Sport elite vs. Integri-t

Hi all I’m hoping you can help me with a decision regarding my ottbs grain.

I’m moving him to a boarding barn that feeds purina products. Any other feed is an extra cost so I would like to feed what I am offered by this barn. My options are Trimax, sport elite or integri-t.

My ottb is getting older and is staring to be a hard keeper. However he is very laid back and is now semi retired due to arthritis of the hock and stifle. I have had him on integri-t in the past and he wasn’t fond of it although I like the grain as it is low NSC and has a very high fibre content.

What grain would be best suited to him? I am no expert in nutrition!!
Thanks in advance

I’ll be interested to see the responses you get. I like the look of the analysis on the Trimax for an older semi-retired to keep weight on. I’ve always lived by more hay/grass than any type of feed but Trimax and Sport Elite seem like good options. Have you asked your vet? Maybe they have some experience with those feeds with other horses.

I also had moved my horse (OTTB) to a barn that feeds primarily Purina. He was on Integri-T and Trimax (1/2 and 1/2) and was doing well weight-wise. He is not an easy keeper but not the hardest keeper. However, as his workload increased and his feed increased to keep pace, he went a bit nuts. I’ve had this horse 5 years and this is not normal for him - he’s generally quite laid-back.

I know the Trimax is noted to be lower-NSC, however I know of other horses that don’t react well to it and can’t be on it. I think we hit the point with mine where he couldn’t deal with it any more (he was only getting 4 cups of Trimax twice a day but apparently that was too much). I recently switched him over to Tribute Kalm and EZ (on top of the Integri-T) and he’s settled significantly.

Otherwise, I do like the Trimax and the horses also seem to enjoy eating it. I would try him on the Trimax or a combination of the Trimax and Integri-T, and just keep an eye on his energy level. If you’re still riding him and suddenly he turns into a spooky, high-strung monster, then remove the Trimax

I’ve always had great results with Trimax.

All good feeds! Trimax might be best for your horses since you mention that he didn’t like the Integri-t.
Elite is a bit lower in calories than Trimax and Integri-t.

My extremely hard keeper TB has thrived on Trimax, and I’ve tried high end feeds including Tribute and Buckeye. He is not hot on it.
