Triple Crown 2020

The Travers: Tiz the Law was awesome!

It will be so weird if he wins the Derby and Preakness. Is he a Triple Crown winner, given the one-turn, mile and a furlong Belmont? Oh well, the Triple Crown is an artificial construct anyway–looking forward to seeing this horse run again!

He is such a beautiful moving horse, it was a real treat to watch him run today. And another great race from Gamine - wow she is something else.

Wow, that was some kind of horse, hit the wire running easy and putting more distance yet behind him.

Reminds me of Secretariat, what a thrill to have one that can do that to follow now.

I didn’t even knew races were on, was flipping to hit another channel and there was that race, about to be run.

Smart jockey, didn’t push the horse when he didn’t need to.
Video for those that missed it:

Watch Tiz theLaw’s gallop out in the video–seems like he did not want to pull up!

In your position I would go. You will probably regret it if you don’t take advantage of this opportunity. Wear a mask and bring a ton of Clorox wipes with you for public toilets and other areas.

Tiz the Law is very exciting. His gallop out was more impressive than his race. Wonder how soon Tagg will move him to Churchill to get him prepped there?

Tiz The Law’s stride and running style reminds me of watching AP. He has that same efficiency of motion

What happened with Uncle Chuck? He has the most peculiar stride/movement: extreme reach and it looks like hes trying to strike the ground/operating in slo-mo. Dog tired mid-stretch but he almost looked unsound by that point. Finished a well-beaten 2nd to last. I was not expecting him to win but I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be that bad.

This morning as I’m reading the BH article about the jocks riding in the KD having to be at Churchill by August 3, this will stir the national level pot for the top riders.

The jocks must be declared by 8/18. Out of state jocks must have the RT-PCR COVID-19 nasopharyngeal test on 8/24.

At least 8/31 is a Monday so the weekend before KD weekend the jocks would be able to ride in their current location. Once they’ve been at Churchill, they’ll have to under go their customary circuit’s return to riding.

Jocks’ agents will not be allowed access to the stable area 8/22-9/6 and the PPD draws will be video conference.

I agree this type of process should be done but still slightly amused by the potential impact to the other circuits currently in competition. True, no huge races that weekend but still races for the 2YOs, 3YO and up and the not-KD material horses…

More about the 2019 Triple Crown than this one…

It’s been announced that last year’s Derby winner Country House will be standing at stud at Darby Dan. $7,500 LFSN

Country House: 7 starts, 2 wins, one a maiden special weight and the other the Kentucky Derby on a DQ; Other than that, a second in a Grade 2, and a third in a Grade 1.

Never raced after the Kentucky Derby because of a series of illness/soundness issues.

I guess the relatively low stud fee reflects his record, and maybe he will be considered a bargain as he is well-bred, but …

Malibu Moon: 2 starts, 1 win in a maiden special weight. No other races due to soundness issues.

Began his career for $3000 in Maryland. Maybe he will be considered a bargain as he is well-bred, but …

Oh wait.

@Texarkana yeah… stands at Spendthrift. I believe his stud fee this year was $60,000 S&N (so a drop from $75,000 last year) with Spendthrift not currently announcing stud fees on their web page.

If only we had a crystal ball when selecting stallion prospects.

I may have told this story before but I did an all show at Gainesway several years ago for the stallions $15k and under and I was shown this new stallion at $12,500 and I privately thought “Are you kidding me”.

Yeah that was Tapit.

I’m a genius.

I’ll one up you in breeding genius- I did some work for Michael Dickinson while Tapit was in training. You couldn’t have paid me to breed to him. I vocally suggested gelding him on more than one occasion. Just one more example of my chronic foot-in-mouth-itis.

Give someone enough time and everyone has these stories. A friend of mine had a mare that about twenty years ago he wanted to breed to a son of Forty Niner, So he went to Kentucky and inspected the candidates. He was shown a stallion just starting out that he thought was a terrible individual and another that he went with who seemed to check all the boxes.

He bred the mare to Banker’s Gold. The terrible individual was Distorted Humor.

If we could predict the future, we’d all be rich

On a racing note. Last year I was a fan of Storm the Court, in part because one of TVG’s on-air broadcaster’s, Brittney Eurton, father, Peter Eurton trains Storm the Court. Watching TVGs camera (and mike) on Brittney the day Storm the Court won the BC Juvenile still brings tears of joy to my eyes.

I still have a soft sport for Storm the Court but I still don’t get why he’s in the KD based on his on-track performance this year. I get the thrill of even getting a horse into the KD gate, he has the points, but still. Does the thrill of being in the gate compensate when the horse finishes up the track (watch, he’ll win  )?

@Where’sMyWhite I guess you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

This year is so atypical why not take a shot?

The horses are older. More experienced. More fit. More rested. The once in a lifetime atmosphere will now be like any other major race day.

That was a great racing moment for sure. Here it is if you’d like to relive it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm0czyBYo4M

@Texarkana Someone, when I asked here years ago if Tapit looked like his conformation photo IRL, said that he looked put together by committee. I wonder if it was you?
