How can I be putting words in your mouth when I am quoting exactly what you said?
But you didn’t quote what I said. You wrote what you interpreted I said in your own interpretation.
No one expected Soup and Sandwich to displace and finish eased. If you thought that’s what I meant then you are taking your sarcasm to your own level. Soup and Sandwich was expected to enter the race and break as a front runner with a lot of speed. He did so. He was a long shot to win the Kentucky Derby; his likely-hood of winning not very high but the chance is always there (Mine that Bird anyone). His betting odds were 24-1. His PP was a bit of his nail his coffin.
I am now totally confused… first you don’t know why other jockeys didn’t press John V and Medina Spirit. Then Soup and Sandwich did and was doing, at least IMO, well, until he displaced.
What is the real point you are trying to make? Always run at the BB entry? Horses run better or worse(?) then final odds? How to explain the duel between Mandaloun and Helium until Helium faded after the 1m pole?
Everyone interprets what someone else posts differently unless a cold hard, indisputable fact is quoted. Any ‘opinion’ not based on fact will be interpreted differently. It is not a fact, unless you can back it up with actual names/numbers, that BB horses break on the front and stay there. Yes, BB does tend to train his horses to break out front but that doesn’t always happen.
It’s really, really easy to ride every horse differently and better after they’ve crossed the wire. Not so easy in that 2 minutes between when the gates open and the horses cross that wire.
Yes, actually, I did quote exactly what you said, using the quote function to do so.
If you don’t mean what you say, then perhaps you shouldn’t say it.
A little off topic but does anyone know what happened to Bezos (Empire Maker) who for awhile was the next 3 yr old wonder before he started, got beat in first race, than ran well around two turns but stopped really bad at Keeneland (?) for his first stake. .I do not think he broke down but did he bleed? There was no follow-up in the news. Thanks
I just looked around to see if I could find an answer…yeah, Bezos backed up really badly in the Lexington. Like you, I haven’t seen any follow up.
People can only respond to what you write. No one is in your head and able to guess what you “mean”.
Saying that “his PP was a bit of his nail his coffin” (sic) is difficult to understand considering that he broke very well. He was eased up when he flipped his palate. In what sense was his PP a nail in his coffin? Your method of writing, which seems like stream of consciousness, is difficult to follow.
When you said “everyone expected Soup and Sandwich to run the way he did” did you mean that everyone expected him to break the way he did?
I’ve not seen anything either.
I also did some poking and didn’t find anything more about Bezos after the Lexington.
He was a bit of a stinker in the gate during the load and may have run his race before the gate even opened. This in conjunction with the distance may have been more than what is Bezos’ cup of tea.
This spreadsheet might be interesting (or not).
I am out of work, have too much time on my hands, so I did a little investigation to try to correlate Derby finish with points earned and money won. Not much correlation.
My original intent was to see if the Derby field could be reduced below 20 by not only counting points but requiring a minimum number of point, e.g., 25, 30, 40. Results? Meh.
That is interesting reading. Thank you for putting it together.
I don’t know much about racing…does anyone have the time to explain what a displaced palate is? Does this happen to horses outside of racing? What causes it? Is there a way to prevent it?
Thanks to anyone who doesn’t mind a stupid question.
From the American College of Veterinary Surgeons
The soft palate is an extension of the hard palate that separates the oral cavity and the nasal cavity. The soft palate forms a seal with the base of the epiglottis, which is a triangular shaped piece of cartilage that flips up to protect the airway during swallowing so that food does not enter the trachea and progress down into the lungs (Figure 1). During exercise the soft palate moves down and the airway opens up to maximize the amount of room for air to pass into the lungs. Importantly, the epiglottis sits firmly on top of the soft palate to form a seal between the oral and nasal cavities, allowing the horse to breathe entirely through its nose.

Thanks for the link!
Okay…that sounds a bit like…roaring? Is it just better understood now?
Overheard on TVG…
Caddo River and Mandaloun are out for the Preakness.
Probably a wise decision for both colts. Maybe Medina Spirit will win due to lack of serious competition.
I think the Belmont on the other hand, not sure Medina Spirit is capable of winning that one, particularly if colts show up who didn’t run in the Preakness.
Topic has changed but for those who were previously wondering about his size, Paulick Report just posted that Medina is 16.1
Thanks!

I just saw that. Bob Baffert claims to know nothing. Again.
Color me shocked! I wonder how Johnny V feels about this?
