Triple Crown Gold

I’m looking forward to trying these! Hope the dealers in my area get them.

@grayarabs you are right, I totally forgot. I’m so used to knowing that TC Sr is 11.7% no matter how you slice it, as WSC and ESC are the same. They are the same for several other products as well, but you’re right, they do use WSC + starch = NSC.

Re: iron - there really is a point where there’s just too much. I honestly don’t know what that it. I’ve looked at a lot of hay analysis, and talk with a few folks who have seen 1000s of them over years, and have not run across a situation where the forage was providing so much Fe that it couldn’t be balanced with reasonable amounts of Cu and Zn. Some were high enough for sure that they couldn’t really afford to add more, but at that point it’s not all that hard to feed calories without added iron (only what’s intrinsic to, say, the alfalfa pellets), and are able to use v/m supplements that don’t contain added Fe.

For what it is worth, I FB messaged TSC to see what all they plan on carrying since the site only lists Senior, Lite, and complete. They said at this time those are the only TC feeds they plan on carrying but will pass along my interest in carrying Growth and RB. So, for those who have conveniently located TSCs, it might be worth while to shoot them a message, email, or phone call and express interest in the feed you want. Though Senior is such a popular choice, many will likely be satisfied with it. TSC is the easiest of the feed stores for me to access so I would love for them to carry Growth and RB.

Our local TC rep posted on FB and said that Gold won’t be available at TSC - it will only be available at independent feed dealers.

She also confirmed that Perform Gold will be available within the next few weeks at dealers and the other Gold products should be available late Feb/early March.

Soooo, any suggestions for a balancer that does not add iron, and helps with the Zinc/copper ratio? Since I do not trust myself to make an informed reading of the TC 30, I’m interested inJB’s recommendations.

California Trace (or similar like Arizona Copper Complete) would be best! I use CA trace.

I currently use TC Lite so I’m super excited for it to (eventually) come to TSC. I may have to look at the new line, but it not coming to TSC might make the decision for me and I’ll stick with the lite.

My numbers may be a touch outdated:
Vermont Blend $1/day largest bag
High Point Grass (Horsetech) $0.80/day
California Trace (California Trace) - $0.80/day in 40 day supply
U-Balance Foundation $1.80/day
Sporthorse Grass (Uckele) $1.30/day
Arizona Copper Complete $0.50/day
High Point Grass/mixed hay $0.82/day

If you’re already on a RB you like and just want copper and zinc, Uckele’s copper and zinc seems like it could be a good option and comes out to $0.6/day if memory serves.

What is best entirely depends on the rest of the diet. California Trace for example is not a “complete” v/m supplement.

I really like High Point Grass - it’s almost as complete as you can get, but you’d need to add Nutramino/Tri-Amino if your forage is a bit low in amino acids,

But the cheapest option really is to just add copper and zinc to an existing ration balancer. Honestly, unless your forage is already astronomically high in iron, the amount of Fe added by a balancer isn’t that big a deal, along with its cu and zn, and it’s really easy and cheap to add those 2 minerals. Pelleted versions tend to be more palatable, though none of my 4 have any issue with the powder, and many horses don’t either. Horsetech would be happy to send you samples of the powders. Start with a TINY amount. I personally mix them 1:1 and feed a whole scoop (it’s a small scoop, 1/2tsp I think?) of the mix.

This from my TC rep just now when I made an inquiry:

"Triple Crown is getting ready to launch the new Gold Line next month and these products will offer the great benefits of our existing line along with some additional components. These new products will have added electrolytes, whey protein, an ingredient called CalSea which will add extra gastric support and the Senior will be 2% higher in fat.

This line was designed to be exclusive to our independent dealers so unfortunately there will not be access to it through Tractor Supply. If it is something you are interested in I can reach out to XXX Feed again and see if they would be willing to bring that in as well."

So whomever had the suspicion this was going to happen, you were correct!

This. I use Uckele pelleted copper and zinc, which I got on sale at Riding Warehouse with free shipping. Valley Vet often has a lower price on them but charges shipping. If you feed 1 scoop of each a day it’s less than $10 a month. Powder would be even cheaper I think (haven’t actually done the math).

I currently feed the Pro Elite Grass Balancer but this sounds super exciting!!!

Custom Equine Nutrition also has a Copper/Zinc with Diamond V yeast that makes supplementing those 2 a little easier and more palatable.
If you get the largest size she sells I believe it comes out to $0.15 a day.

Has anyone tried it yet? I am going to try it in a few week when I need to get more feed.

Senior is not released yet. I believe the Perform and Balancer are available in some areas.

My feed store called me today to let me know they have it in stock

So I spent a good amount of time chatting with the TC rep at the AERC convention in FL this past weekend. And as someone who has been a pretty diehard Purina user for several years, I’m impressed with the TC Gold line which could really cut down on things I am adding to my feed (both of my competition horses get Outlast and Super Sport added to their feed). Basically (although they are no supposed to come right out and say it) their gastric support product is very much like Outlast (ocean derived minerals, shape of minerals is the key) and if you are feeding 4 lbs of the feed, you are getting a full dose of it. It is also my understanding that the Perform will contain BCAA’s

I’ve wondered about Triple Crown for years because they seem to migrate to different mills periodically to manufacture their formulas. I saw on their website that a fire destroyed their mill in 2013. They own the formulas but contract with several mills to produce their products.

Blue Seal here in New England produced TC products for several years well before 2013. I used their light product for a while. Blue Seal stopped producing TC and it went to a different mill. I’m using Blue Seal Sentinel LS which cheaper at $18-19 per 50 lb bag. They currently are manufacturing TC again.

TSC is a pretty good sized chain with about 1800 US stores. One of their stores in this area has poor customer service and their prices are higher on many of the products they carry. I’m concerned about how long horse grain sits in a TSC warehouse and if it’s rotated so you are getting the freshest product. I’m sticking with my local Blue Seal store.

TSC in my area has a huge problem with bugs in the grains, as well as with long-expired product on the shelves. I’d like to have the ability to buy TC products again but am leery of taking the chance :frowning:

None of the Triple Crown dealers near me are going to carry the Gold. I was so disappointed at first, but our Tractor Supply has gotten better about keeping Ultium in stock with fresh bags so our old one that needs high calorie, high fat pelleted will stay on it.

I wanted to try Perform Gold for her, but at least we know Ultium is working and she eats it well.

You need to read the date codes on the Triple Crown bags. They are on the bottom typically and give the year and date it was manufactured (i.e. if the bag was manufactured on day 45 of 2020 you’ll see “45” on it) - I always check them when I buy.
