Triple Crown- now made by Nutrena

There are many mills. Most of Cargill’s mills are ionophore-free. Some are not. You can find out where the feed you get is milled and if it’s i-free.

Can anyone offer insight on horse feeds that are NOT manufactured at the same facilities that manufacture cow feed?

There’s a recent thread on this - it may be the one with the title talking about this recent issue.

The relationship with Cargill and Triple Crown ended last year.

Are you sure? Who has them now? I could have sworn that was still the case.

I asked a ag agent friend of mine, as she is more in the loop on who owns who to some degree. She’d actually just had this conversation with a Southern States rep. According to the rep, Cargill does most of the mixing, then that mix is sent to TC plants where a few additional things are added, then bagged. At least that’s how it’s currently working on our general area.

TC has no plants. They do not own a manufacturing facility. They have never owned a manufacturing facility. Their products are all toll milled according to their formulations and specs. Cargill’s contract with TC expired last year. Southern States mills for them in the east, as well as Kent/ Blue Seal, and a few other companies in the west.

I, too, am very well connected in the Ag industry.

It’s not a contest as to who’s more connected  I just indicated “who” she was so it wasn’t just some random friend repeating what they heard on the streets.

I’m just repeating what a SS rep told my friend. Clearly, if what you are saying is true, not all SS reps are really understanding what’s going on.

I was just trying to understand the current situation, that’s all.

There was a thread here last year about the Nutrena TC split. I was told by my dealer that once the split occured Nutrena could sell the Pro Force Fiber in my area- a feed I was interested in because I had felt it was most like the old Pennfields Fibergized.

I like Nutrena, mostly because I have one horse that seems to do better on their feeds than anything else. I wish they’d get their poop together because I resent that I feel I might have to defend using their feed, even if “my” mill is ionophore free.

How do we find out where our TC is milled?

Ask your individual retailer. There are codes on every feed tag that will tell you as well, but every company codes their tags differently, so your retailer is your best bet.

Call or email Triple Crown. Give them the tag info on any bag you have and they will you exactly where it is made. I had a problem with a bag of their Senior feed - just looked different. I emailed them and gave them the info. They explained to me that some mills make the feed differently (exact same ingredients just added at different stages of production). Some bags of the feed are single-lined while others are double-lined…that’s due to different mills that feed stores in my area get their feed from.

Triple Crown is always very helpful and answer your questions almost immediately. I’ve never had an issue with their customer service, response or knowledge.
