Watching Thorpedo Anna fade in the stretch and then more concerningly voluntarily switching her leads in deep stretch had me saying, “Ooh, she’s uncomfortable.” Not sure if my armchair horse trainer is right, but that’s the impression I had.

The race wasn’t exciting for me. I did sit up when Drexel Hill almost bumped with the horse coming on her right, but then she shifted into a another gear and pulled away.

I would like to see an overhead view of the race. It was pretty darn good coming to the wire! I was cheering for Taxed to keep coming.
Justify adds a 2000 Guineas winner to his resume, out of a High Chaparral mare. Godolphin is having a good Classic weekend so far.
Finally had the time to do a little research and settled on my imaginary bets for the Derby. Staying with Tiztastic and Publisher. Will add Sovereignty as Godolphin seems to be on a roll this weekend. Across the board on all 3.
My longshot pick is American Promise based on the ability of his trainer to get one to peak at the right time but bet to hit the board, not necessarily win the thing. Show bet and a couple of Exacta combos.
Have to root for Tiztastic because I have a dark bay/chrome Tiznow related clone as well - although if his personality is anything like my guy I would bet with caution .
Journalism because he looks like a Derby horse
Sandman because he knocked me over with his elegance
Coal Battle just because
They all look so good, I want them to come home safe and may the best horse today, win.
Sovereignty is my top pick! But I think Citizen Bull and Baeza could be fun upsets.
I’m also rooting for Tiztastic because he was foaled on my birthday, and I just love his face/expression
I would put $ on the flashy gray (Sandman?) just because he’s so pretty and it’s high time for another gray to win the Derby again. Absolutely no other reason.
One of the photos here:https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/thoroughbred/sandman/2022 of him schooling in the paddock shows his exuberance.
He is elegant isn’t he?
I am impressed with how well the turf course is holding up in all this rain.
Looks like they FINALLY got it figured out & going right.
It sure has held up beautifully after all the rain.
They said they went with angular sand in the mix as opposed to the more rounded river sand on the theory it will hold together better.
Cant believe my longshot pick is getting bet down to 12-1 (was 30-1 the other day). The horse has fast fractions and works but little race experience, very impressive looking too but??
Suspect the slop will dry out a little but make it tough for anything to close through heavy traffic. But you never know who will want it enough to push through it.
What a finish in race 8, Churchill Downs Stakes.
4 across the wire.
Mindframe wins by a long nose & it was a dead heat for 2nd.
Unable to make a new post for some reason
So adding here.
Update on the horse that was pulled up in race 3
Softens Grande not starting in the Derby for the connexions…MR pointed out he now has the best older dirt horses in the country…he may be right.
Repole sure has rotten luck with the Derby. This is his 3rd derby horse that has been scratched.
Sandman I think. I like the Tapit x Distorted Humor lines, but I know nothing so.
adding Luxor Cafe and Coal Battle. I think either 1 or 2 of the 3 will hit the board.
I will be rooting for American Promise and Coal Battle, both for purely emotional reasons. I gave up making logical Derby picks years and years ago.
Kopion looked great!
Looks like the track is playing pretty close to normal despite slop, they are going fast and the closers are getting up there.
